A victorian shadow box used at funerals – Catz’s entry

Retro Renovation stopped publishing in 2021; these stories remain for historical information, as potential continued resources, and for archival purposes.

Here is Catz aka Sandy’s entry in our Found Objects Found Art contest.

catzsandy-shadowbox2She writes:

Hi Pam,

This shadowbox was something I found in my grandparents’ basement when I was a little girl.  Apparently, in the “olden days,” wakes were held at the person’s home.  My grandfather’s aunt used to own the house and this shadowbox was displayed at her wake.

While some people might be a bit unnerved by something like this, I find it a lovely piece of family history and am glad to have it. (Catz) Sandy

I love the family history significance (I’m very sentimental about such things), but it’s also unique. You certainly don’t see these in every other home!

Ooh! Nice find. Great that it is part of your family history, too.
