I am launching another new feature — more frequent reader giveaways — and asked owner Steve Bauer, who I have known since like Day 1 of the blog, if he’d like to offer up our first prize. He was happy to oblige. This poster — The Lion and Dove — comes from an original illustration by Walter Crane in 1901. While not 1950s or 1960s mid mod — it certainly was the kind of neo-Victorian revival we saw in the 1970s. It’s always fun to mix things up — and hey, it’s free if you win. The poster (see the dimensions here) actually has an interesting, historical story, Steve explained on the Bradbury Blog:
This magnificent work was originally the creation of the talented and prolific 19th century illustrator (and social activist) Walter Crane, it being his critical response to the bloody and protracted Second Boer War (1899-1902) fought between British forces and two South African republics.
In this very floral design (c.1901) Crane features the belligerent British Imperial Lion being gently pacified by the white Dove of Peace. The meandering banner text “The Wilderness shall blossom as the ROSE” is a paraphrase of the prophetic words found in the first verse of the Bible book of Isaiah, the 35th chapter.

I would hang it in my work office bathroom in an amazing 1910 brownstone in Milwaukee. We have a historic office that has a bathroom with 15′ ceilings and an amazing terrazo floor. This would look fantastic and give the room a much needed homey touch.

I would hang it in my daughter’s room. I plan to decorate it in neo-Victorian, and this would go very nicely! I’ve already got the linens, dresser, chest of drawers, brass bed, and wash stand, but I really need some beautiful pictures. Thanks!

I would hang this in our den. It is a darker room with bookshelves & a fireplace & this would look amazing on one of the bare walls. I love it!

this would look amazing in my bedroom. it has this sort of lush green art deco wallpaper, and since we just moved in, we don’t have any wall hangings! worth a shot right? 🙂 good luck everyone

I would hang this in my office, as my house is all decorated mostly with midcentury stuff. They say to display things that you love in your workspace, as it can lead to more work happiness and increased productivity. It would look lovely with my Harper’s Weekly illustration.
