What self-respecting Retro Renovator could be without a set of chalkware sea creatures in their pastel-colored bathroom? The folks at Cats Like Us — serious purveyors of rockabilly wear and kitschy collectibles — are providing this week’s giveaway: A set of reproduction chalkware mermaids. Thanks, Cats! I show the pink, but if you win, you can choose from six different styles. And, no Made in China here! These are all hand-made by Barbie K, who lives near Cats Like Us in Tonawanda, New York:
Chalkware—both kitschy & cool—is Barbie K’s passion. When the price of vintage chalkware sky rocketed and it was no longer affordable, she decided to take matters into her own hands—literally! Barbie K has created her own line of “retro-reinterpreted” chalkware including mermaids, hula girls and pin-up girls. She uses a Freeman McFarlan reproduction vintage mold for each piece and decorates them with pearls. The hand poured, hand painted mermaids with the pouty red lips are her best seller.

I have soooo wanted chalkware fish or mermaids for my bathroom. It would be really, really cool to win them. I’m torn between the pink, aqua or black. My bath is pink, but I’m giving it aqua accents, but the red-haired black mermaid really rocks! Decisions kill me!

Will I be disqualified if I say that I already have so many mermaids and fish that my girls are going to kill me if I hang them all in their bathroom, which will have a mermaid theme? But I have long coveted these particular aqua brunettes–brown hair like me and my daughters, aqua like the original wall-hung toilet and double sinks. Also have some cool vintage tattoo fabric with mermaid pinups that I’m going to make into a shower curtain. Oh, yeah, I need to win this!

I love mermaids! It all started when I went to Disneyland at age 3 and saw them on the submarine ride, back then they had “real” mermaids sitting around on the rocks. Blonde with baby blue, that would be my choice. Thanks!

I’m a redhead but I think the blond with blue tails would look the best in my bathroom. I have one Miller fish, so it would be nice for him to have some friends. Super cute!

I would love to have the blonde. My 6-year old son and 2-year old daughter claim to be merpeople, so hanging these in their bathroom would make them feel right at home!
