Made in America Holiday Gift Guide: Handmade treasures on etsy.com

uncommon retro modern clockYes, I would be remiss in my continuing coverage of Made in the USA gifts if I did not point discriminating shoppers to etsy.com — the leading online marketplace for handmade artistry. I spent several hours window shopping, and came up with 16 gifts to love. Above: A modern clock with a face available in three colors — desert red, sea blue or chartreuse — made by married duo Vincent and Jessie Leman in Valparaiso, Indiana. It’s $115. They have many other handmade clocks in their etsy shop, “uncommom”.

Click on over here to see my Treasury — where you can look at each of my picks and dive deeper into etsy for yourself. As with ebay, it’s all about choosing your search times to uncover what you might like… As you can see, I’m partial to crocheted granny square afghans and scarves… mixed media collages about houses… ceramic birdhouses… toys made out of Fox River Mill red-heeled socks — things I’d generally feel safe about buying online without seeing in person. And how about commissioning a house portrait — the selection of artists on etsy who will do these is huge. But, I bet you better get your order in soon.

I love Etsy, but…. I find it overwhelming. The things I find interesting are things I’ve never seen before, so I wouldn’t even contemplate searching for. It needs better “curating” to help the gems become more discoverable.

I ordered several “Custom Vintage Pet Portraits” for Christmas gifts, and one of my own dog for myself – what a hoot! They turned out great, couldn’t be happier. Seller was excellent to work with – made the etsy experience superb! (note: I’m just a satisfied buyer, I am in no other way affiliated with seller)

I love Etsy and agree it’s a great place to find handmade pieces. My favorite products are those made from recycled products (there are 100’s). This year I purchased these really cool mini-bags made from recycled tennis balls for my nieces, as well a purse made from knitted plastic grocery bags for my friend. Very reasonably priced I might add.

I work with a lot of artists and advise them to list on Etsy because there is no place quite like it. Also, I learned something new today…I had no idea that you could be a curator and build a Treasury. That is pretty awesome…thanks for sharing and teaching me something new Pam. Happy Holidays!
