Fabulous 1970s decorating ideas — guess the movie

pam kueber - Updated: April 5, 2012

Retro Renovation stopped publishing in 2021; these stories remain for historical information, as potential continued resources, and for archival purposes.

Okay, I am crazy overloaded what with all the activity in the house. So here is an easy, fun, mid-day story. I get lots of emails from readers suggesting I talk about this old movie or that old movie with great interiors. One day I will start a series. But meanwhile, no one has ever sent me this suggestion. I watched this movie — my late night in the man cave screen shot above — over the weekend. Absolutely hilarious. And fabulous 1970s interiors and costumes. Can I stump you? Surely not. Who can guess?

Pam, I can’t WAIT for a 70’s tsunami!!! I wasn’t born until ’77, but I’ve always thought my “previous life” ended right before that. I’m not sure why, but I feel so connected to that decade. 😉

Well, “Missy” Baxter was an interior decorator, after all. No wonder they remodelled all the time 😉

Speaking of movies, I must recommend you see the bathroom in Mildred Pierce from 2011. The story takes place in California in 1930 or so. The bathroom walls are multi colored green ceramic tile and the tub, sink, and commode are dark dark pink. This was a 5 hour miniseries and the bath was never shown completely at once, but if you watch the first 2 hours you will see most views. On another topic-while riding my bicycle in Canton Ohio the other day I saw a double floating carport on a 1956 ranch. Stunning to say the least (much thanks to your site for developing my retro passion).

What is a “double floating carport?” Take a pic next time – although, don’t fall of your bike or get hit by a car ogling!!!!

Rita, I love your blog but the pale yellow on darker yellow captcha is almost impossible to read and when I get it wrong everything gets thrown away. Just wanted you to know I, and probably many others, haven’t been ignoring you.

If I remember right, Hazel’s kitchen went through at least two or three transformations over the course of the show. The one with the blue appliances, and for a while she had brown appliances, and I think there was one other color way.

We don’t have cable, but we get “Antenna TV” over the air. It’s all vintage sitcoms. It’s great to check out the sets on shows like Partridge Family, Gidget, Dragnet, Leave it to Beaver, Burns & Allen, etc. My favorites are Bachelor Father and Hazel; both shows redecorated. Hazel got a big new kitchen with all blue appliances. Gorgeous in Technicolor!!!
