Snaps to reader Andrew, who let us know about this 1962 Norfolk, Virginia time capsule home, listed for sale by realtor Mick Shaw. The home retains most of its original details, including a fabulous mid-century modern room divider/planter, an amazing built-in Nutone entertainment system, original lighting, and two sets of sparkle gold laminate counter tops — one white, one pink. Thanks to some great photography courtesy of Tom Benvenuto, real estate agent and architectural photographer in Virginia Beach, Virginia, we can all admire this home’s classic mid-century charm.
Above: The house is lovely on the outside… but wait ’til you get inside…
You’ve gotta love that slate flooring in the entryway and those original pendant light fixtures, but the real showpiece of the space is this unusual mid-century modern room divider. Not only does the divider add pattern and interest to the home’s entry, it also is a planter with a floor to ceiling shelf detail.
- Our story on random-color slate tile available today.
From the listing:
- Price: $175,000
- Year built: 1962
- Square footage: 1,973
- Bedrooms: 3
- Bathrooms: 2.5
Stunning mid century modern brick ranch with an incredible retro personality. Very unique architecture and gardens. Cathedral ceilings, huge windows, new roof-carport and double patio on wood lot.
The home’s main living space boasts a huge brick fireplace and a super cool built in Nutone radio/intercom system.
Could those doors be for a built-in record player and record storage? Looks like there might be even a speaker built into the fireplace.
A blue and white vintage bathroom with a mosaic floor tile pattern we’ve never seen before – nice!… Hall Mack integrated toothbrush holder and what looks to be a sleek laminate vanity that appears to be original.
Don’t worry, there’s a pink bathroom too — one that has a pink sparkle laminate counter top.
The home’s exterior landscaping details like the unusual circular cement raised garden bed near the front door. I’m already trying to figure out how to construct one of these at my house.
What a beautiful — and livable — mid-century house. Clearly loved, and maintained by its owners over the years. 🙂
Mega thanks to Realtor Mick Shaw for allowing us to feature this home and to real estate agent and architectural photographer Tom Benvenuto for supplying us with a photo tour of the property.

Not quite perfect, but I could certainly live there. The window coverings need help, and a coppertone refrigerator needs to be located. Minor issues. I really like the way they covered the baseboard heaters in the family room. And even a cool cat tree in the entry. I can just see my kitties perched there, ready to greet guests.

Let me second that congrats! How awesome to know this house has ended up with the right new owners!

My husband and i just purchased and moved into this wonderful house! And what a surprise when i stumbled on this post while catching up on retro renovation blog posts. The house has been very loved and taken care of and has so many mid-century modern details that we adore. We’ll be undertaking some freshening up and renovations but will be staying true to its mid-century modern architectural roots.
I’ve started a blog if you’d like to follow our progress 🙂

Says Not For Sale; Delisted 2/20/2014. Was it sold?! To a RetroRenovation fan, I hope?! Really curious to know what it was selling for after seeing so many comments about its reasonable price!

Ack. I do not know. It was there when we published….

Yes, it is sold. We tried to buy it actually because we loved it. It even had this great foil ceiling in the blue bathroom. Everything was in pristine condition. It’s as lovely as it looks.

That’s one of the dreamiest time capsules we’ve seen for a long time. The beauty of that entry way wall-divider/planter makes me weep.

Fabulous! I would move in tomorrow! Oh, I sure hope someone who really loves and appreciates this home buys it! Thanks for sharing! Love every inch of it!

I would move into this house! Gorgeous! I hope the person who buys this takes care of it and preserves it!
Stephanie says
Amen to that.

Oh my goodness, how I LOVE those windows in the living room! Such a lovely way to connect to the outside when you are inside.

Love the bathrooms, esp. the blue one. My grandparents had a “magic” toothbrush hideaway space just like that. Also, the cement for the raised bed probably goes pretty far down. I think it is meant to contain the bamboo. Possibly a section of sunken concrete drainage pipe.

Finally, kitchen cabinets that I can really like. Flat with no hardware, just like mine. This is a great house at a really great price. Again, very well kept by the owners. We have to appreciate the care they have given this home.
