[Entries now closed] Enter to win a custom house portrait by Christian Musselman

pam kueber - Updated: November 9, 2020

Retro Renovation stopped publishing in 2021; these stories remain for historical information, as potential continued resources, and for archival purposes.

custom home portraitCongratulations to our winner Melissa, whose number came up when we spun the random. Thanks to everyone who entered — your comments were wonderful!!!! ENTRIES NOW CLOSED. And thanks to Christian Musselman for providing the giveaway prize!

Yesterday, Kate took you through the process of working with super-talented designer Christian Musselman to create a custom house portrait of her home. It turned out fabulously! Now, Christian is working with us to deliver a one-two punch by offering one lucky reader the chance to work with him to design a custom house portrait of their house. Continue reading to learn how to enter.

How to enter to win a custom house portrait from Christian Musselman:

  • To win, you must be a subscriber to our newsletter (Yes, this is “what’s in it for the blog” — you can opt out at any time after the contest ends, or continue on for the stories and because we like to do giveaways every now and then!)
  • Then, to enter, use the Comment field on this post below and tell us: What do you love about the exterior of your house — what features would you have Christian emphasize? Or, a happy whatever — we’re easy, the goal is joy.
  • One entry per person. U.S. and Canada residents eligible.
  • Entries close on Monday, May 23, 9 a.m.-ish Eastern — that is, we will close the Comments field at that time.
  • Prize: There will be one winner. The winner will then work with Christian per his process to create a custom home portrait. The winner also will receive a printed copy of the portrait (about the same size as Kate’s) mailed to their home. (Reader is responsible for their own framing and matting, if they so desire.) The process to complete the portrait may take 4-6 weeks, depending on the completeness of the photos provided, the winner’s responsiveness, and Christian’s schedule. The winner also must abide by Christian’s rights and reproduction policies, which he will communicate to the winner.
  • Pam will choose the winners via the Random Number Generator at random.org. She will email the winner. [Tip: Be sure you enter your email address correctly in the email field of the Comment form.] The winner will have five business days to respond. If we do not hear from them, we will choose the next person who commented. Lather, rinse, repeat. We will post the winner’s first name as soon as all is confirmed.
  • Terms of use apply.

Many thanks to Christian Musselman for hosting this awesome giveaway!

And, congrats to the winner of our last giveaway, Lynne, who won a pair of Bella Pamella aprons.

My favorite feature are the circa 1957 cedar shakes that are the perfect proportion on our North elevation: we have a funky asymmetric roof line to boot. Every time I pull in the driveway I think the developer really had the MCM vibe in spades. We changed the window out in 69′ ( the interior space was reconfigured), went from a large horizontal to a 5′ vertical casement and those cedar shakes just work beautifully.

What an awesome prize – i can’t pick just one thing I love about my house. Besides, here’s a chance to see my house through someone else’s eyes!

I love the white elongated brick on the front of our house that matches the great midcentuy fireplace inside. I also love that our house sits on a hill and we’re about to install retaining walls, natural plants and a patio up top (landscaping starts on Monday!).. I think I’d really want to emphasize how the house sits above the street (23 steps from the street to our front door!). As silly as it sounds I’ve always though our little bungalow (ranch) looked majestic sitting above all the others!

I love our front door with a diamond window, the accent brick, and our retaining wall with landscaping.

I think it would have to be some of the mid-century touches we’ve put back on the house— awnings, aluminum metal door. And the audaciously loud colors we painted it. Or the dog in the window. Too many choices!

We always come and go from the back of our house. I love our backyard in the summer. There are flowers on the balcony, sidewalk and on the fence. It is very inviting! If I won, I would have Christian remove our air conditioner from the facade and change the color of our door to blue. This is the year that we will repaint our door!

I’m not exactly in an MCM, but an apartment in Paris in a building built in 1795. I’d love a drawing of the facade!

My diamond with a medallion in the middle garage door, cupola, flat roof, clerestory window, dragon door knocker and more all watched over by Cat the cat from any of the big windows or the round room windows all make my 1955 diamond in the rough ranch a challenge for an illustrator. We haven’t started restoration on the outside yet, but would love an illustration!!

My favorite would be the original 50s front door.
