pam kueber - Updated: November 9, 2020

Retro Renovation stopped publishing in 2021; these stories remain for historical information, as potential continued resources, and for archival purposes.

custom home portraitCongratulations to our winner Melissa, whose number came up when we spun the random. Thanks to everyone who entered — your comments were wonderful!!!! ENTRIES NOW CLOSED. And thanks to Christian Musselman for providing the giveaway prize!

Yesterday, Kate took you through the process of working with super-talented designer Christian Musselman to create a custom house portrait of her home. It turned out fabulously! Now, Christian is working with us to deliver a one-two punch by offering one lucky reader the chance to work with him to design a custom house portrait of their house. Continue reading to learn how to enter.

How to enter to win a custom house portrait from Christian Musselman:

  • To win, you must be a subscriber to our newsletter (Yes, this is “what’s in it for the blog” — you can opt out at any time after the contest ends, or continue on for the stories and because we like to do giveaways every now and then!)
  • Then, to enter, use the Comment field on this post below and tell us: What do you love about the exterior of your house — what features would you have Christian emphasize? Or, a happy whatever — we’re easy, the goal is joy.
  • One entry per person. U.S. and Canada residents eligible.
  • Entries close on Monday, May 23, 9 a.m.-ish Eastern — that is, we will close the Comments field at that time.
  • Prize: There will be one winner. The winner will then work with Christian per his process to create a custom home portrait. The winner also will receive a printed copy of the portrait (about the same size as Kate’s) mailed to their home. (Reader is responsible for their own framing and matting, if they so desire.) The process to complete the portrait may take 4-6 weeks, depending on the completeness of the photos provided, the winner’s responsiveness, and Christian’s schedule. The winner also must abide by Christian’s rights and reproduction policies, which he will communicate to the winner.
  • Pam will choose the winners via the Random Number Generator at random.org. She will email the winner. [Tip: Be sure you enter your email address correctly in the email field of the Comment form.] The winner will have five business days to respond. If we do not hear from them, we will choose the next person who commented. Lather, rinse, repeat. We will post the winner’s first name as soon as all is confirmed.
  • Terms of use apply.

Many thanks to Christian Musselman for hosting this awesome giveaway!

And, congrats to the winner of our last giveaway, Lynne, who won a pair of Bella Pamella aprons.

this is such a wonderful prize! My outside.. HMM favorite thing are 2 tiny feature. My small metal mail door, and my milk bottle access in the wall outside to the kitchen. Neither of these would show up well on a portrait.. but I love them just the same.

I’ve loved everything MCM from a young age, largely inspired by my grandparent’s self-designed 60’s contemporary that our family has enjoyed for over 50 years. My husband and I recently purchased our own atomic ranch to carry on the tradition and would LOVE to capture it in Christian’s artwork. The high, wide windows and mixed exterior materials (brick, stone, siding) would all look great in one of these renderings.

Would love to have a portrait of my 1965 John Lyttle home in North Tustin, Ca, specifically emphasizing the cathedral ceiling entry

I searched high and low for a 1960’s two-story traditional on a large lot. The one we finally found had all the “charm” taken out of it by the previous owner- decorative windows taken out, the lamp post and porch railing gone, the 40-year-old rhodies and other beautiful plants removed, etc., leaving the house plain and stark, with nothing but bark and a few scrub grasses in the “flower” beds. Our goal was to bring our baby back to life and give her some character once again. My husband handcrafted beautiful pillars for the front porch and built a raised rock flower bed for the front side yard, complete with a 3-light lamp post (which I thought was solar when I bought it, therefore no wiring, but somebody needs to wear their glasses when shopping. Sorry, hon!) The house gets painted next month (yay!) and will be the perfect color of traditional gray with white trim to work as a backdrop for our flowerbeds, which are now filled with dark pink and plum roses and bright white calla lilies. What I love most, though, is rocking on the front porch with my husband, as we enjoy the serenity, wave at our wonderful neighbors, and gaze at all my husband has accomplished. Yes, I’ve put my time in on the house, too, but the real work has been done by my husband, and I love him for loving me enough to do so.

I’m glad that this site is Retro Renovation and Pam has said she can put on it whatever she wants- pure MCM or not – While my kitchen is retro diner goodness, my house is a 1929 Tudor. I have actually been wanting a portrait of my house for a long time but the artists I keep finding are flaky. This is a great idea. I just adore my little house. It literally fell in our laps in 1998 just before we got married. A family friend was selling it and even though we hadn’t even begun to think of buying we took the plunge. Best decision we ever made. It’s got such beautiful features. Mahogany woodwork, leaded glass windows – including one in the front door – arches between rooms, built ins., I could go on and on. I love that we have also have a small dog, a small cat, a small family (1 kiddo). Even our vehicles are small – a mini cooper and a scooter with a side car. Everything is proportional! I would want to emphasize the charm of the little curving walk way up to the house, the sloping roofline , and the three shades of green with white trim I have painted it and the stunning Japanese maple perfectly placed on the corner of the lot. The old growth rhodies out front would be a little shorter and the peonies would stand up!

I love the diamond pattern of brick that creates a border around our garage doors

I love the front patio I added to my little boxey ranch. It’s safety for my pets, adds an outdoor space, reduces Western sun exposure to the house and creates some needed architectural interest! It’s a win.

I grew up in a mid-century modest ranch home that my brothers and I will soon sell and I would love a portrait to remember it by.

What an amazing giveaway! Christian is awesome! I love my house so it is really hard to think of what I would want to emphasize.
