1970s novelty wallpapers sure to keep your guests in the bathroom a longggg time

Pam Kueber - September 8, 2017, Updated: June 24, 2021

Oh, those cheeky 1970s. Wrapping up wallpaper week here on the blog, a look at some of the 1970s illustrated novelty wallpapers from Hannah’s Treasures. Who knew there were so many line drawing wallpapers of folks malingering in the bathroom — with mermaids, even!

Detail of the wallpaper above.

Above: The 70s saw a Victorian revival, complete with ferns of course! Note, I have several rolls of this wallpaper that I picked up on the cheap on ebay over the years. There’s gold ink in mine, too! Really quite stunning! Five double rolls currently available.

Above: This paper is fabulous, what with the wicker lounge, pergola thingie — and green colorway! Two double rolls in stock currently.

Above: This one has the mermaid (notice the wife in the mirror!), a scuba diver, a phone booth and toilet planter. Oh my! Four double rolls currently in stock.

Above: Same design, different colorway. Six double rolls available.

Above: And one more colorway. Six double rolls currently available.

These reminded me of our bathroom wallpaper in the house I grew up in. Ours actually said “Acme Boarding House” on one of the strips and the pictures were so much fun looking at when I was a child.

Ok I am looking for my old wallpaper we tore down. It looks just like the shower pattern to pattern but all the showers are full and it has lol signs that say bathrooms are full on all floors and everyone is waiting in line. Maybe if u can tell me the maker of the bathroom ones I can find it online. i kinda just wanna draw off it not hang it.thanks.

Hi Nichole, I don’t know the answer to this one. There were sooooo many makers back in the day. I tend to think your best bet is to get in contact with the main companies that sell vintage wallpaper to (1) see if perchance they have it or (2) let them know your interest. Then, also start saved searches on ebay and watch like a hawk. Etsy too.

Here is my main story on where to find vintage wallpaper: https://retrorenovation.com/2011/03/01/7-places-to-buy-vintage-wallpaper-from-1-25-to-200-per-roll/

      Good luck.

I have been looking, for years for the wallpaper my grandmother had in her bathroom. It was a black and white toile with women skinny dipping in a swimming hole with trees. Does anyone know if they’ve seen this or something like this? It was the funniest wallpaper.

I get a 404 Page not found. ???? I’ve been hoping to find this paper for years. The mineral springs/spa one was in my childhood home.

There are numerous links in the story, I didn’t test them all…. Search the key vintage sellers: https://retrorenovation.com/2011/03/01/7-places-to-buy-vintage-wallpaper-from-1-25-to-200-per-roll/

If that doesn’t work, start stalking ebay.

    Hello!
I am looking for wallpaper my mother bought in Roanoke? I think in 1969 or 1970. It was black and white, a cartoonish scene of “getting to the outhouse.” As I remember it, there were five or six scenes within the wallpaper of a man almost at the outhouse – at the top of a sharp mountaintop, on water skis, behind an airplane – don’t remember the rest. I’d really like to put it in my half bath! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I am searching for a wallpaper similar to these. It was black and white and had various out houses. A tree fort with a tree outhouse. A space ship with a little space ship out house floating behind it. I’d love to find it.

I just bought a vintage trailer (1971 aristocrat starliner) and removed wall paper to find the outhouse wallpaper you’re talking about! It’s amazing and I’d love to know where to find it! I have a picture
