Continuing work on the Encyclopedia, I just published a page on Marvel Steel Kitchens — which were sold as Westline Steel Kitchens by Western Auto stores. See the page here.

As I look through all these gorgeous metal cabinets, I think about the utterly drab and boring kitchens that are being built now and could absolutely weep.
My house was built in the 50’s, and when I bought it 10 years ago it came with boring dark wood cabinets with ivory-colored round knobs. I can’t afford to put in a new kitchen, but I’m thinking of cheating and painting the cabinets some nice cheerful retro color just so I can have some fun.
Maybe I should paint them to match a 20’s-green-and-cream Hoosier cabinet that I’m working on restoring. But then the yellow is so pretty – and the turquoise – and the red – even the white….

Those Util-a-Door (don’t you love that name?) cabinets are updated Hoosiers, perfect for a compact kitchen.

Pam, I love it that you are featuring the metal cabinet companies. I just want to add that when my father sold GE cabinets in the 50’s, he did a lot with stainless steel counter tops. These were not through GE though; he would get them from a company in Springfield MA. I really love those countertops! Since Hotpoint was the “bargain” choice for appliances, they were not offered in color, but some of the more expensive appliances from them, especially built-ins, did come in stainless. Thanks for the updates on the companies who made these wonderful metal cabinets.

Good Bones just installed a mirror shiny stainless countertop this season. Good thing I was sitting down and not drinking anything.

A woman who was 50 years old in 1950 would have been about 4 inches shorter than a 50 year old woman today. Yet, our kitchen cabinets are at the same standard height of 36 inches. Am I the only one who finds it strange that the height of kitchen cabinets hasn’t changed in over a hundred years?
Pam Kueber says
I agree.
