Vintage Masketeers optical sign eyeglasses wall hanging — great graphic appeal!

Pam Kueber - Updated: August 25, 2020

Retro Renovation stopped publishing in 2021; these stories remain for historical information, as potential continued resources, and for archival purposes.

Put your eyeglasses on to see this up close: A vintage Masketeers eyeglasses wall hanging — used in an optical shop maybe?  The whimsical graphic appeal: Fabulous! I am a fan o’ the Masketeers and watch what comes up on ebay, and this one seems like quite a rare wonderful oddity — “woddity” — to me.

  • Check it out, for sale on ebay now  >>  COOL MID CENTURY MODERN 1965 MASKETEERS EYE GLASSES OPTICAL SIGN WALL HANGING (affiliate link).
    Description from the listing:

Here is a very cool 1960’s eye glasses Optical sign. This mid century modern era wall hanging was made by Masketeers Inc in 1965. It is signed on the back.  The eyes are a tin metal with great reflective quality with eye glass frames around them painted gold.  Comes with the original hanging chain ready to make a great addition to your mid century vintage decor or sign collection.    An wonderful gift for the optometrist or opthamologist in your family!  Would make a great office display!  Don’t miss out on this hard to find sign in such great condition.

It measures approx. 23 1/2″ inches long & 6 1/2″ inches wide, with the chain overall length is approx 14″…

If I weren’t already doing a tiki living room, I might just have to have this. Thanks to the seller for letting me feature the photos!

So cool, reminds me of the Great Gatsby!

“But above the gray land and the spasms of bleak dust which drift endlessly over it, you perceive, after a moment, the eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg. The eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg are blue and gigantic — their irises are one yard high. They look out of no face, but, instead, from a pair of enormous yellow spectacles which pass over a nonexistent nose. Evidently some wild wag of an oculist set them there to fatten his practice in the borough of Queens, and then sank down himself into eternal blindness, or forgot them and moved away. But his eyes, dimmed a little by many paintless days, under sun and rain, brood on over the solemn dumping ground.”
