Remember — black lite? This is the Hawaiian dress I wore to the recent Tiki weekend once the regular lights went down, and the show lights went on. This makes me want to wear my vintage tiki clothes all the time.

Love the dress fabric. We went to a tiki event in Alameda CA 2 weekends ago at Forbidden Island – they close thier parking lot and do a swap meet of sorts with vendors there selling all things tiki. Everyone is encouraged to arrive in their tiki, rockabilly, 1950s or 1960s attire. IIt was great, our first visit to this annual event. I’ve been in full blown tiki-mode ever since. Haven’t been able to find a vintage tiki dress to fit yet, so am sewing one, fun thing is that some of the pattern companies have a retro section with patterns from the 1950s and 1960s, and even the ones that don’t specifically label a pattern retro have some styles that are very vintage indeed! I was thrilled with the enormous amount of bolts of reproduction 1950s and 1960s fabrics at the local fabric store.

Oh black lights. Reminds me of the football homecoming dance my senior year of high school, 1974. I was wearing what was in style at that time — a floor-length plaid skirt with a knit top. Very modest. But, under the blacklight, my white bra shone through the knit material of the top. The other girls laughed at me. I was mortified. Today, that look would hardly raise an eyebrow!
