Ooooooh, Kate just sent me a photo of her new, installed atomic starburst toilet paper holder — one of the last remaining stock from Rejuvenation’s current supplier. I thought it looked lovely but frankly, I found it very difficult to focus, as I was so OCD-alarmed that the toilet paper was hanging the wrong way. It needs to go OVER! Talk about a timeless design issue: What is your view on this importante topic, dear readers? I invite you to vote and to comment, too.

Over, of course. – State law. 😉

Kate’s right 🙂
I prefer it under and have to resist “correcting” it in my daughter’s bathroom. I figure she is an adult and can do it wrong if she wants 🙂 .

I think that the comments support my own conjecture that there is more than one factor to consider. I have a toddler granddaughter, so I am happy that her parents hang it in such a way as to entice her to pull it all off the roll; it makes for adorable videos.

Years ago there was a news reporter that worked for Global TV in Toronto named Bob McAdorey. He would go out on the streets and ask people a question of the day and the show their answers on the TV. One day he asked this very question, should the toilet paper be hung over or under. Most of the people were giving very serious thought to their answers as to why it should be one way or the other and some had strong opinions about it too! Then he asked a guy just getting off a bus who was on his way home from work. The fellows response was, I don’t give a ____ which was you hang it, just so long as I can wipe my ___ with it! That must be 35 years ago and I still laugh thinking about it.

My opinion of Canadians is that they are very practical folks and also usually polite. I can see them taking such a debate very seriously. I cannot see them swearing on TV. It must have been all the more funny because it was rare. 🙂

I had an aunt & uncle who installed two rolls, one over, one under because they couldn’t agree!

Good morning, all you mid-century and potty-obsessed people! I’m with Saundra. When I saw the photo of Kate’s new starburst TP holder, I saw, first, the beautiful starburst! and only second that the TP was in the correct position for someone like Kate who has raised a puppy (is it Leo?) and/or kitten. When I moved into my new home, I had not had a cat for over a year. So I installed the TP roll over. Four months later, we got two two-year old kitties from Kitty Harbor, our local no-kill cat shelter. Grace Hopper and Sampson Occum were no kittens, but Occum had been born in that shelter and had lived there all his life. It soon became apparent that everything in a normal home was new, exciting, and playable. Many of the new, exciting things were in bathroom–a shower curtain to hide behind and bat at, swirling water in the toilet, running water in the sink, etc. One morning I woke to the sound of him gagging, and followed a long trail of TP down the hall and into the kitchen, where he was eating the other end of the TP to see what it tasted like. Not good, apparently. Needless to say, the TP has rolled under ever since, and there are no more TP streamers decorating our house.

Under ….as any owner of a cat fascinated by a TP roll can attest. The cat might be able pull a few sheets off with under but that is nothing compared to an entire pile of TP when it’s placed over and rolled off in a matter of minutes due to the natural scratching action!

I definitely prefer over, but if I have a playful cat or toddler in the house it’s got to be under or you’ll end up with a floor covered with TP!

Exactly.

I just keep it up on the towel bar or tank back. (Cat & Toddler) & No I’m not sure who makes the bigger mess.
