Anita buys a 1962 Delmonico Stereo Console

pam kueber - Updated: November 10, 2020

Retro Renovation stopped publishing in 2021; these stories remain for historical information, as potential continued resources, and for archival purposes.

Anita in Northern California has the bug something fearsome:
Hi – I stopped by the Goodwill store here in Manteca this afternoon in hopes of finding a vintage lampshade.  But instead I stumbled upon this 1962 Delmonico Stereo Console unit in perfect condition!  It was $49.50 and I had to buy it.  We just brought it in and plugged it in, the stereo works, sounds good, the turntable works.  The photos do not show true color, the speakers are more of a buttery yellow, the inside wood is maple and the whole cabinet is perfect.  The paperwork was all with it along with a warranty card that was filled out by the purchaser on 10-30-62 in Vallejo (not sure you can read it in the photo).  Anyway, it’s very groovy and a much better addition to our home than a vintage lampshade!  Anita
Anita’s friend Ron, who she copied on the email, also pointed out:
Wow. I see the tuner even has a short wave band!

We always had a Dishmaster in our 1950 South San Francisco house when I was a kid. I don’t think I ever knew anyone else who had a Dishmaster and sometimes friends would come over and ask “What is that?” when they would see it. My brother recently installed one in his house. They are very cool!

I will just need your mailing address. Not sure how Pam handles these things on her website, maybe you can email your info to her and she can send it on to me?

What a fantastic find! *envy envy envy* The graphics on the Telefunken manual alone are worth the price! It looks like the owner really cherished and took care of this stereo.

Yes, you did stumble on a great find! The fact that it’s tubed makes this far more desirable in my mind. Hopefully they are still in good shape and you don’t have any noise coming from the speakers. Any hissing or high-pitched sounds indicate that tubes are failing in the circuit in which you are using, such as the preamp section of the record player. My guess is that there is a large tube complement in this console because there’s so many amps, rectifiers, decoders, and tuners. Replacing all those tubes would cost much more than you spent. But hopefully everything is still in good shape and you can enjoy the harmoniously pleasing sound that tubes excel at. As stereo consoles go, they don’t get any better than this.

Hi – Yes it is tubed! We think that perhaps the only component of this stereo that is Telefunken is the turntable, it is in almost brand new condition, appears to have barely been used. However Nathan (the other half of this madness here in Manteca) is going to delve deep into the console in the near future and see what kind of tubes etc are hiding inside. Will keep you posted. He just sold a pair of Telefunken V76 tube mic pre-amp from his recording studio a couple months ago.

Very cool console. Is it tubed? My hunch is that it’s early solid state, but if it is indeed tubed it’s worth something. Telefunken arguably made the finest condenser microphones ever, and their tubed tuners were superb sounding and very high quality. Hope you enjoy it. As stereo consoles go, it may be one of the best made. Good find!
