Open thread: What’s on your weekend agenda?

Pam Kueber - Updated: March 26, 2009

Retro Renovation stopped publishing in 2021; these stories remain for historical information, as potential continued resources, and for archival purposes.

go-fish-art

What’s on your list for the weekend? Weekend warrior? Or goin’ fishin (as in Rejuvenation “salvage art”, above)?

I’m doing a major clean of the bathrooms, oh joy. But also, taking my 14-year-old shopping for vintage clothes at Goodwill and Salvation Army — she’s into it now, hurray!

What about you?

Pam – Some of my best mom and daughter memories from my teen-age years are of my mom taking me thrifting, vintage clothes shopping and antiquing. She never was particularly into antiques, but happily went along with my obsession with art deco (that began as a pre-teen, after seeing “The Cotton Club” on cable TV). She was a flight attendant and would take me on trips just to go shopping. I still have articles of vintage clothing that I never wear, but can’t part with because of the memories attached to them. Enjoy creating these memories with your daughter!

That is such a sweet story, Glamorlux Nancy. Don’t worry, I am enjoying every minute!

We’ll be trying to figure out how to get the original plastic tile in our 1955 bathroom to stop popping off. Sigh.
On the plus side, we just made copies of a special section our local paper did when these houses, made by National Homes Corp. of Lafayette, Ind., debuted nationally. We’ll also be combing through those.

Picking up all my paperwork from getting taxes ready and getting ready to go on a trip to Las Vegas with my favorite 15 year old who is sooo excited. Does anyone have a recommendation for a nice dinner with her or a great neighborhood to check out? Believe me, I need a vacation!

Hi Sara. I’ve sent an email to Uncle Jack at VeryVintageVegas.com for reco’s… so check back here and we’ll see if he can post a response in time. Be sure to check out his site, he knows where all the coolest neighborhoods are, and can clue you into retro-events if they are on: Click here for VeryVintageVegas.com

Here’s another post on a store that L.A. Leslie found called Retro Las Vegas. Take pics! https://retrorenovation.com/2008/08/10/its-a-small-world/

    Hello,

    Kristin

You know—last year we had a freeze, which knocked out lots of those pretty Japanese Maples. I was shocked, so be sure your tree will withstand your climate.

We are zone 4-5-6 so make sure it will handle your zone.

Kristen Japanese Maples do have a hard time with heat reflected off of pavement or brick walls – otherwise it should be ok on the west side. Downy Serviceberry is a nice smaller tree with good fall color and edible blueberry-like fruit. There are some nice witch-hazels too that wouldn’t get too big. Of course most plants close to a house will need to be pruned anyhow. Hope this helps.

Saturday: Checking my weekend sources for danish modern goodies, potentially persuading DH to actually look at said goodies, tightening the bolts on the shifting main bath toilet, replacing the guts on the leaking basement toilet and spreading mulch in the garden.

Sunday: urban hiking and lunch with friends, maybe a plant nursery trip… i.e. all the fun stuff

Picking out a good front yard tree to plant! We wanted a Japanese Red Maple but the word is that they cannot hack the bright afternoon sun. Anyone have any suggestions? Our yard faces South and in the summer, the afternoon sun is very bright from 12-4PM. I’d like something that size and matchy-matchy with the Ranch style.

well. Being a stay at home father, I don’t really get a “weekend” and my wife’s days off are sun. and wed. so this is just stuff I’d be doing anyways.
I’m going to try to rustle some (more) of my friends up to help me pick up a 1953 bendix duomatic washer/dryer combo that I found for $50. I’m going to be running around after a puppy that my wife is bringing home later today. I’ll listen to some of my record collection as I’ve finally got a decent phonograph to listen to 78’s on. I’m going to finish cutting down our 70 year old apple tree, start cutting down our 70 year old plum tree (it’s hollow, i don’t cut good trees down willy-nilly), clean up the previous owners mess that was under the now disassembled deck in our backyard. If I’m feeling plucky, I might start digging up our sewer line to repair a collapsed section that has rendered our toilet useless. I’ll also be cooking, cleaning, and running after a 2 year old. I think I’ll just take a nap now while I can.
