[Contest closed.] Be sure to enter to win this month’s Love The House You’re In collage… like Joe, Anthony & ruff ruff Bella, above. Read on for instructions on how to enter. It’s pretty eeeezzzzeeee….
To enter, complete these two steps:
- Leave a comment on this post answering the question: What’s your favorite flavor for a summer ice cream? And: Cone? Cup? Shake?
- And, subscribe to my newsletter. Yes, this helps me build my newsletter list… I send ’em out just once a week, usually.
Please read all the rules here before entering, they all apply. I’ll pick a reader the last day of the month — so there’s a lot of time to do some crucial ice cream taste testing, as required, to make sure you leave an answer for the ages that’s just right.
Meanwhile — thanks again to Mel for a fabulous collage! You can find Mel’s collage works on flickr and her blog, Much Ado About Stuff.

I live in Maine in summer and when I get here in spring it’s still quite cold. I kept seeing folks in tee shirts lined up outside the Dorman’s Dairy Dream stand on Route One in Thomaston. And it would be 50 degrees. Yes, these Mainers love their ice cream. And particular flavors are very popular at the here-still-common dairy store (it was Ehrler’s dairy in Louisville, KY on summer nights when I was a kid). Two currently vie for my favorite: vanilla ice cream with Grape-Nuts in it (this and grape-nut pudding wildly popular here) and Orange Pineapple ice cream (not sherbet, but creamy delicious with candied orange peel). My used shih-tzu is quite fond of the Orange Pineapple, too, as the wallpaper pic on my cell phone will attest!

The treat that means Summer to me is an old school Creamsicle, vanilla ice cream encased in a layer or orange sherbert on a wooden stick. Brings back memories of hot summer days running out to the street at the sound of the ice cream truck bells yelling “Hold it!”. Then the man in the white uniform would give me change from one of those big metal change makers attached to his belt ( I still want one of those!).
I see National Creamsicle Day is Aug 14. Yumm!

This is good timing as I’m mad at my house at the moment 😉 I just love fresh blackberry sorbet, which is impossible to find. So I’ve been debating buying an ice cream maker. I can see by Shelley’s comment above that this might be a smart move!
Thank you for offering this contest again!

Thrift stores are often awash with old ice-cream makers, so you’re in luck! Unless you are a true masochist, don’t buy the hand crank model! We got ours for less than 10 bucks, and use it for (my) Laura’s kids’ fave, homemade blackberry…I make an old-fashioned style vanilla base and we cram it with all the blackberries the kids can pick in the park adjacent to our house. Best served in large quantities from cold bowls!

Thanks for the inspiration, Dave. I’ll check out the local thrift stores in town.

Fresh fruit sorbet, handmade with pure ingredients. Current favorite is coconut sorbet for $2 scoop at the popular BuKu street food restaurant in Raleigh, North Carolina. Served in a chilled stainless steel bowl. (No styrofoam for me.) Runner up for second place is a cucumber avocado sorbet that I once had with gazpacho soup — just wonderful as a savory approach to frozen goodness. I am a newspaper subscriber already. Find so much inspiration on your site for my time-capsule 1957 brick house.

Elizabeth,
I had a 1956 brick ranch on Dogwood Lane in Raleigh until relocation to the coast in 1993.

When I was a kid my favorite ice cream flavor was Peppermint Stick from this ice cream shop called Peter Pan Ice Cream. I remember begging my parents to stop and get me a cone on the drive from our home in Overland Park, Kansas down to Wichita to visit my grandparents. As I got older, and more “mature”, I loved Jamocha Almond Fudge from Baskin Robbins – and for years and years that was a guilty pleasure. Just this summer, however, while thrifting at Goodwill, my husband found an ICE CREAM MACHINE! Ahhhhhhhhhh………. the pleasures of homemade ice cream have entered my life. My favorite so far is MEXICAN CHOCOLATE: which is a blend of chocolate, cinnamon and a hint of vanilla. It’s spicy and creamy and oh-so-deliciously amazingly delightful!

A native Washingtonian must choose nothing other than Starbuck’s Java Chip! It may not be available in other parts of the country, but it is absolutely addictive for anyone who likes coffee and chocolate. Actually, do yourself a favor if you DO find it in your local grocery–DON”T BUY IT!!! You will find yourself eating it to the exclusion of almost anything else, which may be good for your calcium levels but is deadly to your waistline.

Wow, this is one of life’s toughest and most important questions! It all depends on the brand, but it must include chocolate and usually it involves peanut butter or some additional chocolate chunks. My favorite Ben and Jerry’s flavor is Chocolate Fudge Brownie. I don’t waste my time or calories on cones. They interfere with the taste anyway. I get my ice cream in a dish and eat it in tiny bites to make it last longer.

Lemon custard – in a mug. Not that easy to find!

Pick ONE ice cream flavor? That’s almost like choosing my favorite kid or dog…OK, Ben & Jerry’s Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. Straight from the carton, baby!
