It’s time again to enter to win “Love the House You’re In” custom collage by Mel Kolstad. Her latest creation — for last month’s winner, Stacey — is above. Isn’t it amazing…? Imagine what she could do with your house — it’s easy peasy to enter….
To enter this month’s contest, leave a Comment answering the question:
What color paint (or wallpaper design) is on your kitchen walls right now? Optional: Are you happy with it? Please read all the rules here before entering, they all apply.
Just like last month — this contest rewards regular readers, because I’m only leaving it open for 48 hours. I’ll pick a winner on Tuesday morning.
Meanwhile, here is what Mel had to say about her latest creation:
Look at this little gem of a house! When Stacey sent me the photos, I knew instantly how I was going to create the collage. The house and the surroundings have a very “ecclesiastical” feel to them – that’s the only way I can describe it. There is just something so peaceful about this place, which is why I used the calming greens and browns to highlight the house, along with the “overcast” sky. The tiny stones were a wonderful challenge to recreate, too! So there you have it. I don’t want to play favorites but this house was REALLY REALLY fun to do! 😀
Thank you, Ms. Mel. You can experience more of Mel’s world at her blog: Ephemeraology

What funny timing! Just yesterday my husband was making a list of projects and one of them was to touch up the paint in the kitchen. He couldn’t find any of it in the shed and suggested maybe we just go for a complete change. I had to get all Exorcist on him! It’s a lovely, happy, buttery yellow and now I have to dig around in our “filing” cabinet for the original chip to match it. : (

The kitchen in our 1955 ranch is painted yellow. We chose it to go nicely with the gray counter-top paint we used and the white cabinets. Unfortunately, we learned the yellow paint lesson, which is that yellows are REALLY hard to pick from a tiny paint sample. We don’t hate it, but sometimes I feel like I’m inside a packet of honey mustard in my kitchen. Next go-around I think we’ll go with something more toned down. More of a buttery yellow maybe?

We will be putting our house on the market soon. Our current kitchen is painted a deep red. It is far deeper than I’d have chosen, but it makes the room feel warm and I find I actually like it.

The kitchen in my 1958 rancher is painted a color called “Brassy” by Sherwin Williams. It really reads to my eye like a slightly modern version of avocado green, and I love it. Since my kitchen, dining room, and living room are all in one large open space, it really helps to bring the kitchen together with what I have done in the living room, and the colors in my couch.

My kitchen has a fruit print wallpaper from the 90s (I’m guessing here) and I hate it. I just haven’t gotten around to taking it down because I want to get rid of the cheap 90s stock cabinets and the vinyl stick down tiles while I’m at it.

Our kitchen has a Coca Cola theme. I collect antique ads from the late 1800’s through the 60’s. The color is naturally, Coca Cola red on the top 1/3 of the room, with a black strip that separates the red from white wainscotting below. I LOVE MY KITCHEN. Aside from having an island installed perhaps in the future, I wouldn’t change a thing!

When we moved-in to our 1956 ranch last year, I started with the kitchen and chose Valspar’s Cactus for the walls and some burnt orange off the mistint shelf for the cabinets, which were yellowed with nicotine. We couldn’t afford to replace them, so I painted their laminate fronts after priming. It turned-out very well, if I do say so myself. The kitchen was remodeled some time during the late 70’s – early 80’s, so the colors may not be very 1956, but they’ll do while we’re working on the rest of the house. My kitchen is a cheerful place to be.

The kitchen in our 1968 Florida ranch is newly painted Saffron (from Restoration Hardware before they went all greige on us). It’s a warm gold that leads very nicely into the Catalina (deep turquoise) colored dining room. We picked the color to go with the barkcloth on our vintage rattan 1950s couch and chairs in the adjacent family room. We have an orange/citrus/tropical thing going on. The original stove and hood were once avocado green which would’ve been PERFECT but the previous owners painted them white (for resale I’m sure- blah). We need just a little somethin-somethin in the kitchen right now and I am envisioning turquoise appliances to coordinate with the Aqua Sky colored Kitchen Aid mixer I got for Christmas. Someday…

While my house was built in 1993, it has a special “feel” to it. People say it all the time…very homey and calming… We had to renovate our bathroom last year (The shower door in the master bath needed to be replaced) which lead to a total redo with a clawfoot tub and all…but that is for another day…my kitchen? It has a yellow wall paper with a darker yellow stripe and a burgandy border around the ceiling with yellow grapes and turquoise leaves. The kitchen is the next redo and I will probably take down the wallpaper….I search this site daily for retro INSPIRATIONS! 🙂

First comment…it’s what I get for not being able to sleep. Great question! We are moving into our home soon, it is what has me checking this great site all the time. Ohh the kitchen! The wallpaper is very special! Straight out of the time when Dana Carvey said that on SNL as the chuch lady. Eighties glory paper! Cream with mauve splashes all over it. Can’t wait too take it down!
