Retro Renovation stopped publishing in 2021; these stories remain for historical information, as potential continued resources, and for archival purposes.

retro renovation love the house you're in collageUpdate Tuesday morning: I’ve picked a winner, but I’ll leave Comments open in case more folks want to pipe in with ideas for me to work on… Thanks to everyone for all your suggestions, I’ll see what I can do! Stacy was the April winner of our monthly “Love the House You’re In” custom collage made by Mel Kolstad. Another beautiful collage, Mel. Woof! Meow! Readers — this month’s contest will end on Tuesday morning just as soon as I get to my computer, so click on through for this month’s question — and you could win a piece of artwork commemorating your own little castle. Jeez, I need to win my own contest and get one of my house!

To win our May contest:

Leave a Comment answering the question, “What else should Pam write about on the blog? Or, What would you like to read/see more of?” Please read all the rules here before entering, they all apply.

Meanwhile, Mel explains this month’s collage:

Look at Stacy’s beautiful house!  When I was re-creating it for her in the collage, I could almost hear the birds singing and those peaceful “woods sounds”.  Her house just feels like one of those homes that would be so comfortable and relaxing on a warm spring day, hanging out on the rooftop terrace.

Thank you, Mel. You can experience more of Mel’s world at her blog: Ephemeraology

As always, a fabulous collage! And always fabulous information from Retro Renovation. All I can say, is more, more, more! I just can’t get enough! Although, I am partial to the 1960s since we live in a 1968 custom built home. Thanks!

Considering we are all approaching the summer outdoor BBQ season, I think a post on outdoor patio furniture would be awesome. We recently picked out vintage wrought iron table from craigslist to decorate our patio and were given a 1970s lime green umbrella complete with 4 inches of fringe and a giant yellow and green flower pattern on the underside. I think you can go a little more wild with your colors in outdoor furniture than you would on the inside. Fun stuff! Thanks for all you do for us retro renovators.

I love how soft the trees are framing Stacy’s home, Mel! This collage just exudes cozness – and the pets add to the feeling.

Well, Pam, it looks like others have mentioned retro landscaping, too – must be the season. We don’t have much of a front yard, and the enormous sweet gum in the middle of it, which has been ‘sculpted’ by the city to avoid power lines, is not fairing too well these days and I’m afraid we may lose it. So I’ve been looking for lots of ideas for trees and shrubs, but also hardscaping as well.

Yea! Another shot at one of Mel’s wonderful collages. 🙂

Pam, you do a wonderful job with this blog and seem to cover all the retro bases. My favorite are the posts featuring reader’s homes. I love seeing what other’s have done.

I’d also like to see landscaping ideas, although you’ve featured lawn furniture, decorative block walls and some garage door painting ideas. I scour the photos from the period but I’d love some call-outs on plant types. I grew up with gigantic shaped yews in our front yard, so that’s all I can recall for popular landscape plants.

    *fingers crossed*

retro baby rooms are so hard because of the regulations for furniture that seem to change every month. None the less, I would love to see some retro nursery ideas!

I second (or third) the vote for some more ideas on retro-renovating the outside. I would love to see some more posts on patios, landscaping, mcm appropriate plants, etc.

First off, hats off to Mel. Another GREAT collage!

Pam, just keep up the good work! I wouldn’t mind seeing some articles on retro landscaping.

I like to see how others have finished the rooms in their homes. Everyone works so hard finding just that right paint color, or has a favorite “find” that they built a room around, and are so proud of the result. Maybe a “Before and After Thursday” with a few different pics of various people’s accomplishments.

Not stealing anyone’s thunder, but I like the idea of the discussion forum Amy suggested.

One thing you could add that might be nice would be a forum, where different topics or “threads” could be brought up by registered members. Other websites have this feature and it’s fun to share information this way.
Also, I am not the best typist and an “edit” button would be truly appreciated!

    Hi Pam,

I have been dying for you to ask this question! Can you cover some more information on outdoorsie retro renovating?? From patio design, to porch decor, to garage doors (I know you had one article on this), to even just landscaping tips that have a retro tie-in to them?! I haven’t see as much about the outside of homes. Even colors (I know you did one on California Paints) but more would be great! Our renovating this Summer is going to be ALL about the outside and what a better time for article coverage on your blog!

    Thanks!
    Nicole

      Nicole:

I am with you on this thought…I do not find good landscaping resources for those of us who don’t live in California. I have a 1962 funky ranch on a slab in Kansas, and many of the vintage landscaping sources only talk about things that would last one season here….tops!

      Thanks,

      Lisa
