Win a Marimekko apron or classic Aalto vase — two giveaways this week, from Finn Style

pam kueber - Updated: November 28, 2011

Retro Renovation stopped publishing in 2021; these stories remain for historical information, as potential continued resources, and for archival purposes.

alvar aalto 1936 vaseUpdate: Entries (comments) on this story are now closed. Congratulations to winners Renee (vase) and Melissa (apron) — I done spun the random number generator, and their number came up. Prizes awarded! Thanks, everyone, for playing — how much fun to read about everyone’s kitchens! Can you believe it, this Savoy vase, designed by Alvar Aalto, has been in continuous production since 1936 — that’s 75 years. Courtesy of sponsor FinnStyle.com, one reader will win this lovely classic vase this week.

marimekko apronAnd to double the fun, FinnStyle also is offering a second prize for a second reader: a Marimekko apron of your choice. This Kesatori design is my perky favorite — but I count 8 styles of Marimekko aprons, with a total of 14 possible colors. Continue on for instructions on how to enter to win our one of our two giveaways this week –>

Comment to win an Aalto vase or Marimekko apron
from FinnStyle.com

The rules:

  • There will be two winners: One winner of a small Aalto Savoy vase (value: $50), the other, of a Marimekko apron of your choice (value: $43).
  • To enter the contest, make a Comment answering the question, “What are the colors in your kitchen?” You’d want an apron to coordinate, of course!
  • I’ll choose the winner by Random Number Generator Tues. morning-ish, Nov. 22.
  • You must reply to my email within 7 days, or else I move on to the next in line. I’m not chasing you. Make sure your email is correct.
  • U.S. only.
Thank you, FinnStyle!

Green and every other color imaginable snuggled into warm knotty pine.

right now? brown on brown. post-renovation? steel white, true green, pale jade, tomato red, chrome… all pulled together with sauce splashes and wine glass rings.

My little 1940 kitchen has pale yellow walls, white cabinets, white woodwork, butcherblock countertops, red and yellow window treatments and a turquoise floor. 1940 accessories to match. Boy I would love to win an apron! Best of luck to all.

Colors in my kitchen: Benjamin Moore’s Peach Cobbler (coral/peach color) and King Arthur’s Court (beige with pink undertone) chosen to match colors in the barkcloth fabric I used to make pinch pleated valances for the dining room.

And…lots of walnut wood cabinets and paneling on lower half of walls, with White Spungold (original) laminate counter tops. And Copper light fixtures! I’ve been acquiring some copper jello molds and debating where to hang them. I don’t have much wall space.

Seven years ago my house was bland bland bland. I had bought it from an 85 year old who hadn’t updated in years. I naturally gravitated to southwestern colors to warm it up. The kitchen ties it all together, of course, and that’s where we spend the most time. The cabinets are a beautiful Wilsonart grey laminate (chosen to match the grout in the fireplace!) and the walls are a retro geometric pattern with an accent color the exact shade of fresh canteloupe! I have fallen in love with all shades of orange, so count me in for the contest!!!

Our Geneva kitchen is bubblegum pink, refinished from a dull peachy-pinkwith. We have a teal mini subway tile backsplash and a yellow ceiling. Pictures coming soon!

Color of my kitchen? It’s such a mish mash. I’m stalled in the middle of painting my kitchen. three walls are still a cream color called winter wheat, part of one wall is now a 50’s green while the rest of it is still a sponge painted aqua. Stove is harvest gold. Counter tops are white with gold flecks and I’ll soon be installing gray vct flooring in 3 shades of gray. Oh and the switch plates etc are pink.

My kitchen has Cottage White walls (Behr Premium Low VOC Eggshell). Original wood cabinets with original pulls & hinges, painted Gloss White. One window with a white lace valance and stained glass window on sill. Door has glass window with lace panel. Black appliances and a matching black range hood, laminate flooring in a slate pattern, chosen for its ability to cover what lurks beneath. It is a very small space, 8 x 13, and it was dark & dreary before we lightened it up with paint this last summer. I have all new appliances and it is fun to cook in this cheerful space, I wish I could upload a picture!

We’re planning a new kitchen with Bright yellow original 60s tiles on the walls with a chocolate / Bronze round mosaic tile countertop. Our current kitchen is also yellow but more like a mustard yellow with a speckled laminate top.

What are the colors in my kitchen?? Well, I have a pale yellow paint on the outside walls and a 2 tone yellow stripe wallpaper on the inside walls with a burgundy floral boarder (installed by the previous owner in 1996) around the perimeter of the ceiling. However, the curtains were custom made with fabric that matches the border and that is neat. I do plan on repainting sometime soon, but not until my investment increases the value of my house and not the opposite!
