pam kueber - Updated: November 28, 2011

Retro Renovation stopped publishing in 2021; these stories remain for historical information, as potential continued resources, and for archival purposes.

alvar aalto 1936 vaseUpdate: Entries (comments) on this story are now closed. Congratulations to winners Renee (vase) and Melissa (apron) — I done spun the random number generator, and their number came up. Prizes awarded! Thanks, everyone, for playing — how much fun to read about everyone’s kitchens! Can you believe it, this Savoy vase, designed by Alvar Aalto, has been in continuous production since 1936 — that’s 75 years. Courtesy of sponsor FinnStyle.com, one reader will win this lovely classic vase this week.

marimekko apronAnd to double the fun, FinnStyle also is offering a second prize for a second reader: a Marimekko apron of your choice. This Kesatori design is my perky favorite — but I count 8 styles of Marimekko aprons, with a total of 14 possible colors. Continue on for instructions on how to enter to win our one of our two giveaways this week –>

Currently, I’m renting… the walls are a nice warm buttery yellow, but the countertops and cabinets are bone laminate. The dream kitchen, though? Either yellow and aqua with black accents and a turquoise boomerang countertops (just like my Nana had), or PINK. 🙂

The colors of my kitchen are retro pink and aqua. And I love it!

My kitchen is teal (Sherwin Wms. Tame Teal, to be exact!) with some red decor. It would look great with a Marimekko apon in it! 🙂

My kitchen colors are rich brown (cabinets), creamy gold, gray and cream accents.
    I would love an apron!

the colors in my kitchen and the colors i wish to be in my kitchen are two different things. i rent and have a roommate so i can’t do anything that i want. currently they’re browns and yellows, if i had my way, it would be robin’s egg blue and with red trim.

The walls are Cactus Shadow and the cabinets are Tropical Nut, both from Valspar. Basically green and orange 😉

Kitchen is yellow – of course! With white appliances and stainless Dacor cooktop. Never, never buy a black range – we had one and it showed every fingerprint and drop of water. Not to mention the kitty paw prints when we got up in the morning; Noll Baxter evidently likes to walk around on stoves at night.

Bright white appliances, off / antique white painted cabinets, and Army green walls (sort of like Benjamin Moore “cedar grove”). Tile is off white w/ green accents.

Bright gold yellow, red, and turquoise. Not at all fitting for a fake neo-colonial mid-1990s house, but I can dream, can’t I?

We recently relocated to Seattle and have settled in a little 1940’s bungalow. I love early 1960’s style, and that’s what I’m going with as I decorate the interior. In I’m having to work with some 80’s-tastic pink laminate countertops and white-laminate-with-wood-trim cabinets that go all the way up to the ceiling. So to temper the pink and give it a retro feel the walls are going a light yellow green (Martha Stewart paint in Calabash) and there will be pops of turquoise and orange. It looks pretty awesome in my head – hope it turns out that way! Thanks so much for the great giveaway!
