pam kueber - Updated: November 28, 2011

Retro Renovation stopped publishing in 2021; these stories remain for historical information, as potential continued resources, and for archival purposes.

alvar aalto 1936 vaseUpdate: Entries (comments) on this story are now closed. Congratulations to winners Renee (vase) and Melissa (apron) — I done spun the random number generator, and their number came up. Prizes awarded! Thanks, everyone, for playing — how much fun to read about everyone’s kitchens! Can you believe it, this Savoy vase, designed by Alvar Aalto, has been in continuous production since 1936 — that’s 75 years. Courtesy of sponsor FinnStyle.com, one reader will win this lovely classic vase this week.

marimekko apronAnd to double the fun, FinnStyle also is offering a second prize for a second reader: a Marimekko apron of your choice. This Kesatori design is my perky favorite — but I count 8 styles of Marimekko aprons, with a total of 14 possible colors. Continue on for instructions on how to enter to win our one of our two giveaways this week –>

Comment to win an Aalto vase or Marimekko apron
from FinnStyle.com

The rules:

  • There will be two winners: One winner of a small Aalto Savoy vase (value: $50), the other, of a Marimekko apron of your choice (value: $43).
  • To enter the contest, make a Comment answering the question, “What are the colors in your kitchen?” You’d want an apron to coordinate, of course!
  • I’ll choose the winner by Random Number Generator Tues. morning-ish, Nov. 22.
  • You must reply to my email within 7 days, or else I move on to the next in line. I’m not chasing you. Make sure your email is correct.

The colors in my kitchen are a oak panelling on the walls with oak hardwood floors and when polished, it is absolutely beautiful. I live in a converted schoolhouse; in fact, my grandmother taught for years in the schoolhouse in the 1960’s before it was closed due to school consolidation. So, the house has special meaning for me! This contest interests me for another reason, however. My father’s name is Savoy, and I would LOVE to win that vase! I’m keeping my fingers crossed!!!!!

I believe the kitchen countertops are original to the 1941 house. It has aqua/turquoise countertops and backsplash. The floors are white vinyl sheeting with aqua squares. The walls are white and the cabinets are old steel cabinets painted white. I have accents of pink and red.

My kitchen has great Formica tops that are a pink linen – original to the 1959 house. I recently painted my walls Zen green & have a great Harlequin White VCT floor

Since the kitchen had been ripped out (the sink was by the front door-don’t know why!) when we bought out repo’d house, we have no idea what it really looked like – darnit! My walls are sunny yellow…my counter tops are black formica, my carpet is black, white and brown..appliances and cupboards are white…so i guess, yellow, black, brown and white are my kitchen colors!

Our 1955 kitchen got a fabulous redo 5 years ago (after years of gross updates and very little vintage style left). My sister-in-law and I designed, made, glazed and fired, and installed the tile for the triangle mosaic back-splash. The colors are bright blue, soft yellow, burgundy, a light beige, a cinnamon-like taupe, and a light mossy green. It’s hard to explain without visuals, but it is unique and fun.

Brown and black . . . I’m working on it.

My kitchen is a dark avocado green with dark gray tile backsplash. I have ugly maple-y cabinets that are shiny and not my style, but I’m thinking of painting them white.

My kitchen is an odd mixture of former-boarding-house cream gloss paint (odd dirt has to try really hard to stick to it), the cheapest salmon-and-black granite, and oak cabinets. When I can, there will be a total re-do. My house was built in 1954, and I would like to have a kitchen that respects the era, but I don’t want a museum. I’ve been using a lot of teal, from light to dark, in the rest of the house. Chartreuse is a gorgeous accent to the teal, as is red. I have been thinking black and tan kitchen with red accents. Any ideas?

Bright yellow kitchen adjoining bright blue (BM Toronto Blue) dining room (really all one room). Countertop is yucky old (just old, not cool old) whitish grey patterned formica, but would like it to be black or butcher block. White cabinets, but not for long. Extensive collection of vintage enamel cookware in reds, oranges, yellows, blues, & greens. Plus MANY little items with similar colors. In other words, the above apron would be perfect!

Color in my kitchen is WOOD. Wood floors, wood cabinets, and the “butcher’s block” laminate counters. I would like to add some color in the form of new laminate counters! But I will keep the butcher’s block probably for the bar we want to build someday in the basement. Sigh.
