pam kueber - Updated: November 28, 2011

Retro Renovation stopped publishing in 2021; these stories remain for historical information, as potential continued resources, and for archival purposes.

alvar aalto 1936 vaseUpdate: Entries (comments) on this story are now closed. Congratulations to winners Renee (vase) and Melissa (apron) — I done spun the random number generator, and their number came up. Prizes awarded! Thanks, everyone, for playing — how much fun to read about everyone’s kitchens! Can you believe it, this Savoy vase, designed by Alvar Aalto, has been in continuous production since 1936 — that’s 75 years. Courtesy of sponsor FinnStyle.com, one reader will win this lovely classic vase this week.

marimekko apronAnd to double the fun, FinnStyle also is offering a second prize for a second reader: a Marimekko apron of your choice. This Kesatori design is my perky favorite — but I count 8 styles of Marimekko aprons, with a total of 14 possible colors. Continue on for instructions on how to enter to win our one of our two giveaways this week –>

Comment to win an Aalto vase or Marimekko apron
from FinnStyle.com

The rules:

  • There will be two winners: One winner of a small Aalto Savoy vase (value: $50), the other, of a Marimekko apron of your choice (value: $43).
  • To enter the contest, make a Comment answering the question, “What are the colors in your kitchen?” You’d want an apron to coordinate, of course!
  • I’ll choose the winner by Random Number Generator Tues. morning-ish, Nov. 22.
  • You must reply to my email within 7 days, or else I move on to the next in line. I’m not chasing you. Make sure your email is correct.
  • U.S. only.
Thank you, FinnStyle!

Original to the house my mother grew up in, “cocoa capri” beige mosaic-style Formica countertops, beautiful chestnut (?) colored wood cabinets with copper chevron pulls, and beige themed tessellated linoleum flooring. Sounds rather boring but the copper details incorporated throughout really make it pop.

    Dear Pam,

When my painter stood in my completed kitchen, he said “I will never forget this kitchen.” Pointing to a different wall with each word, he said “Ketchup, mustard, pickles and sky.” It made terrific sense in the moment. 15 years later, I am still enjoying the yellow, red, green and blue walls and cabinets inspired by the Mexican tiles that are our splash back and whatever you call the space above and behind the stovetop. We have had the kitchen repainted once and can’t imagine it any other way.

I love the Marimekko apron. So collage-y.
Love and hugs for the holidays and beyond.
Hope you can come see FeMail at the Alchemy Initiative Handmade Holiday Festival Dec. 2/3. Surely will be wonders there.
    Suzi

We have BM Hawthorne Yellow on the walls and a new orange laminate by Pionite on the counters, thanks to one of your blogs on laminate. Thank YOU!

The adjacent breakfast area is sporting a full length stained glass window designed in various shades of blues, greens, gold/browns. The wallpaper in the breakfast area and kitchen is a muted striped pattern of the same colors. The kitchen is still sporting a harvest gold sink, cooktop, and vent hood. The countertops are a dark textured Formica and the floor is a light linoleum. The kitchen came to me in its current color scheme. Photos at:

Dark cabinets, greige tile floor, confetti countertops (white with multicolor “sprinkles”), black appliances, grass green glass backsplash and soffits tiled in 1″ glass tiles in various shades of blue, orange, yellow, green and red, plus black and white. My favorite things are probably my grey cracked ice Formica table with a cool yellow and red floral design and my custom made sparkly white, gold and red “diner-style” vinyl and chrome chairs, and my yellow metal rolling cart (complete with electrical outlet!) and my two retro breadboxes – one red and one orange (when you can’t decide, don’t – get ’em all!!)

I live in a 1958 Cape Cod-esque house. Sadly, my kitchen was remuddled in the ’80s, complete with rust orange countertops, oak cabinets, mauve walls, and an off-white vinyl floor with mauve and teal accents. *gag* Happily, I changed it all (except for the floor… not in the budget yet). My walls are painted fiestaware red, my cabinets are painted bright white, my counters are painted turquoise. I replaced the antiqued brass knobs and pulls with simple chrome ones, and replaced the hideous plastic drop-down ceiling and flourescent shop lights with white wainscot and schoolhouse lights I got from Goodwill and freecycle. One has green and orange stripes around it.:) My chrome Osterizer beehive blender was a $5 garage sale find. I took the cupboard doors off of one set of cupboards so I could ‘showcase’ my predominantly red, white, and turquoise fiestaware. There’s also a few pieces of yellow, lemongrass, and shamrock mixed in.:)
