pam kueber - Updated: November 28, 2011

Retro Renovation stopped publishing in 2021; these stories remain for historical information, as potential continued resources, and for archival purposes.

alvar aalto 1936 vaseUpdate: Entries (comments) on this story are now closed. Congratulations to winners Renee (vase) and Melissa (apron) — I done spun the random number generator, and their number came up. Prizes awarded! Thanks, everyone, for playing — how much fun to read about everyone’s kitchens! Can you believe it, this Savoy vase, designed by Alvar Aalto, has been in continuous production since 1936 — that’s 75 years. Courtesy of sponsor FinnStyle.com, one reader will win this lovely classic vase this week.

marimekko apronAnd to double the fun, FinnStyle also is offering a second prize for a second reader: a Marimekko apron of your choice. This Kesatori design is my perky favorite — but I count 8 styles of Marimekko aprons, with a total of 14 possible colors. Continue on for instructions on how to enter to win our one of our two giveaways this week –>

Comment to win an Aalto vase or Marimekko apron
from FinnStyle.com

The rules:

  • There will be two winners: One winner of a small Aalto Savoy vase (value: $50), the other, of a Marimekko apron of your choice (value: $43).
  • To enter the contest, make a Comment answering the question, “What are the colors in your kitchen?” You’d want an apron to coordinate, of course!
  • I’ll choose the winner by Random Number Generator Tues. morning-ish, Nov. 22.
  • You must reply to my email within 7 days, or else I move on to the next in line. I’m not chasing you. Make sure your email is correct.
  • U.S. only.
Thank you, FinnStyle!

My kitchen was added onto my 1917 bungalow in the 40’s. It’s got turquise walls and a linoleum floor we designed ourselves, a creamy beige with a dark red stripe all around the perimeter. The cupboards are white, and I have a collection of 1950s, 60’s red bowls on top of them. I kept a small part of the wall with the original Pepto-Bismal pink by the stove; I like how it looks like an old Roman fresco. Recently I bought Dotted Swiss curtains from e-bay. They are the same age as the kitchen, are sheer, and had never been used. I think my kitchen looks as if Irene Dunne will appear in it like a mirage, serving fish sticks and peas to her fictional kids.

Hi Sarah, Sounds like we share similar homes! I have a 1900 bungalow with a 1960’s renovated kitchen. Love the sounds of your colors! How did you go about designing a linoleum floor??? We are considering changing our counter tops to a boomerang style that Home Depot offers!

Our 1967 ranch was in such bad shape, we had to gut the kitchen/family room. That was 12 years ago. Currently we have oak floors, yellow wallpaper w/vining fruits (reminded me of Oregon), and red oak cabinets. I’m getting rid of the wallpaper, though, and going to white or light yellow or light green. I loved the wallpaper, but it prevents me from using all my vintage table linens.

My kitchen is modern but built recently. The walls are mostly a very pale gray with a orange accent wall. The back splash is cinnamon and beige glass tiles. It may sound a little dark but is bright, airy and open.

Hello. My kitchen is bubblegumish pink and white, with accents of aqua. Chrome and stainless steel accents on almost everything, my walls are pink with silver atomic starburst print, we even kept our original gold fleck on white counter top. my curtains are miller/ kauffman design of retro cupcakes and I also have curtains with the franciscan atomic starburst print seen on dishes in 1957. My appliances are original flamingo pink from 1952 and 1955. we have a black and white checkered floor, some youngstown steel cabinetry that I had painted white with pink doors and drawers. Our cocktail room/ 2nd kitchen area is like a malt shop with complete red and white with lots and lots of coca cola, we have a crosley jukebox, alot of deco style hardware, but our main color scheme is hot rod retro with leopard print, red, black and white. Our home is a vintage bungalow so each room is different, we have an original pink bathroom that has all originial fixtures and accessories, even the tub, toilet and sink are pink! also with gold fleck and atomic starburst walls.

Thanks for this amazing chance in the drawing. 🙂

I’m a newlywed to a bachelor of 50 years so, my kitchen currently has oak cabinetry , which I’m going to paint jadeite green, the floor is a nice stone colored tile, stainless appliances, hideous green curtains, and brady bunch wall paper, so I have my work cut out for me. I love retro but ……not 70’s retro.

Our kitchen is white, black, brown, and gray… it’s quite beautiful, but it could sure use pop of Marimekko color! Or an Aalto vase full of bright flowers! Fingers crossed!!

The colors of my kitchen. Well, the colors in my kitchen are pretty bland. We have beige tile floors, white cabinets, and black speckled granite countertops.

    Thanks!
