Win a Marimekko apron or classic Aalto vase — two giveaways this week, from Finn Style

pam kueber - Updated: November 28, 2011

Retro Renovation stopped publishing in 2021; these stories remain for historical information, as potential continued resources, and for archival purposes.

alvar aalto 1936 vaseUpdate: Entries (comments) on this story are now closed. Congratulations to winners Renee (vase) and Melissa (apron) — I done spun the random number generator, and their number came up. Prizes awarded! Thanks, everyone, for playing — how much fun to read about everyone’s kitchens! Can you believe it, this Savoy vase, designed by Alvar Aalto, has been in continuous production since 1936 — that’s 75 years. Courtesy of sponsor FinnStyle.com, one reader will win this lovely classic vase this week.

marimekko apronAnd to double the fun, FinnStyle also is offering a second prize for a second reader: a Marimekko apron of your choice. This Kesatori design is my perky favorite — but I count 8 styles of Marimekko aprons, with a total of 14 possible colors. Continue on for instructions on how to enter to win our one of our two giveaways this week –>

Comment to win an Aalto vase or Marimekko apron
from FinnStyle.com

The rules:

  • There will be two winners: One winner of a small Aalto Savoy vase (value: $50), the other, of a Marimekko apron of your choice (value: $43).
  • To enter the contest, make a Comment answering the question, “What are the colors in your kitchen?” You’d want an apron to coordinate, of course!
  • I’ll choose the winner by Random Number Generator Tues. morning-ish, Nov. 22.
  • You must reply to my email within 7 days, or else I move on to the next in line. I’m not chasing you. Make sure your email is correct.
  • U.S. only.
Thank you, FinnStyle!

Most of my kitchen is off-white/beige with dark cabinets (it’s the original color scheme). I’ve added color by making turquoise and yellow print curtains and covering our enormous bulletin board in turquoise. I wear aprons often and am very excited to have a chance to win a Marrimekko apron!
(It’s also fun to read about all the other kitchens!)

Right now avocado green….still a work in progress now that the floral wallpaper is gone!

We’re still renovating our 1954 Cape Cod before moving in. Our kitchen has original gray cracked-ice laminate counters, plus a newish off-white stone-pattern vinyl floor. In the breakfast area, we’re adding pale yellow wallpaper with red cherries and pale pink flowers. Walls elsewhere are being painted pale yellow; the ceiling will be pink. The main labor will be the cabinets. There are a ton of them — custom-built, with 46 doors and drawer fronts, all of which are currently white with a raised mustard-colored molding and a raised mustard-colored oval medallion the size of a TV remote. It’s like looking at polka dots right now. We’ll keep the cabinets and tone down to off-white on white or maybe palest yellow on white.

Red and turquoise are my predominant colors, I’m a lover of vintage so it works.

Bland neutral! But underneath? Awesome early 50’s green and yellow!

I recently, lovingly, restored my kitchen with Gray laminate countertops, a Lime Green Laminate backsplash with white cabinets. It’s simple, fresh and bright and works great with pops of orange from my adjacent living room.

I just moved into my first home & I’m still deciding what colors to use in the kitchen! The kitchen in my apartment was flamingo pink. I loved it, but want something new. I’m leaning toward cream colored walls with black & white check floor & lots of red accents throughout……but I might change my mind by days end!

The kitchen in my 1940 bungalow has cream upper & lower cabinets. Many of the uppers have glass so I can display my pretty things. I have 2 nice windows that let in plenty of light, one over the sink & one beside the refrigerator. My counters are cream corian, the last owners put in stainless steel appliances, as well as a green & brown glass tile backsplash, & we have painted the walls a rich dark brown. My small appliances & accents are cherry red, & the floors are the original wood. I love my kitchen!

Our kitchen is both woodgrain and avocado. Our appliances are all metallic. I want that effing apron.

Kitchen colors….Dark green walls, dark cherry cabinets and window trim, black/tan checkerboard floor (there’s more to it than that but it’s hard to explain without pictures), speckled tan laminate countertops, except on the coffee bar where we have speckled black Corian, and white appliances.
