pam kueber - Updated: November 28, 2011

Retro Renovation stopped publishing in 2021; these stories remain for historical information, as potential continued resources, and for archival purposes.

alvar aalto 1936 vaseUpdate: Entries (comments) on this story are now closed. Congratulations to winners Renee (vase) and Melissa (apron) — I done spun the random number generator, and their number came up. Prizes awarded! Thanks, everyone, for playing — how much fun to read about everyone’s kitchens! Can you believe it, this Savoy vase, designed by Alvar Aalto, has been in continuous production since 1936 — that’s 75 years. Courtesy of sponsor FinnStyle.com, one reader will win this lovely classic vase this week.

marimekko apronAnd to double the fun, FinnStyle also is offering a second prize for a second reader: a Marimekko apron of your choice. This Kesatori design is my perky favorite — but I count 8 styles of Marimekko aprons, with a total of 14 possible colors. Continue on for instructions on how to enter to win our one of our two giveaways this week –>

Comment to win an Aalto vase or Marimekko apron
from FinnStyle.com

The rules:

  • There will be two winners: One winner of a small Aalto Savoy vase (value: $50), the other, of a Marimekko apron of your choice (value: $43).
  • To enter the contest, make a Comment answering the question, “What are the colors in your kitchen?” You’d want an apron to coordinate, of course!
  • I’ll choose the winner by Random Number Generator Tues. morning-ish, Nov. 22.
  • You must reply to my email within 7 days, or else I move on to the next in line. I’m not chasing you. Make sure your email is correct.
  • U.S. only.
Thank you, FinnStyle!

My kitchen currently has white cabinets with gatehouse vintage look chrome pulls, white walls, 1972 faux butcher block counter tops and black applicances. the floor is a gray/tan stone tile. I have brought in splashes of color (red, acqua, yello) in art and vintage s/p shakers, and a vintage 40’s plate.

One day I would like to have a different kitchen floor, one that works better with the adjoining dining room which has a vintage rusty red, gray, and pale apricot or peach broken tile. Dont know what color I could paint the wall besides white.

Right now my kitchen is mint green, mint green, and brick red with some gold. Once I’m done with it it will be buttery cream with red and green.

What colors are in my kitchen? What colors are not in my kitchen! I’ll take anything.

My kitchen is currently a dreary brown, but dreams of being jadeite green and white with a touch of chrome…

Acid green apple (cabinets) and slate green (walls). Yellow formica countertops from the ’70’s and silver/chrome accents. Sounds psychadelic, but it works. I call it my Frida Kahlo kitchen. 🙂

Indeed that Aalto vase would look amazing displayed on our Chromcraft 67′ dinette which is Bone white “granitine” laminate, complimented by chrome and black leatherette chairs. The table identically matches our thinline ceramic backsplash, which frames a charcoal stone tile counter top. All of this is enveloped in muted shades of light sage and vintage pewter. Our kitchen also features rich natural wood tones of honey Oak and espresso Cherry, and a exposed brick look-through hearth. Have apron, need vase! Thanks!!!!

The walls of my kitchen are officially “Green Tea”, which translates to over-ripe avocado. There are some off white laminate counter tops and white tiled bar area. Cabinets are maple and appliances are white. The floor is a light tan color.

Oh! Oh! I hope I win! I spent a year in Finland as an exchange student a bazillion years ago and I love Marimeko! I also love saunas! My kitchen is kiwi green with birch cabinets – and a birch wall (not paneled – just a wooden wall!)

The colors in our kitchen are the holy trinity of mustard yellow, avocado green, and coppertone brown, with a splash of turquoise in the original laminate floor!
