Win a Marimekko apron or classic Aalto vase — two giveaways this week, from Finn Style

pam kueber - Updated: November 28, 2011

Retro Renovation stopped publishing in 2021; these stories remain for historical information, as potential continued resources, and for archival purposes.

alvar aalto 1936 vaseUpdate: Entries (comments) on this story are now closed. Congratulations to winners Renee (vase) and Melissa (apron) — I done spun the random number generator, and their number came up. Prizes awarded! Thanks, everyone, for playing — how much fun to read about everyone’s kitchens! Can you believe it, this Savoy vase, designed by Alvar Aalto, has been in continuous production since 1936 — that’s 75 years. Courtesy of sponsor FinnStyle.com, one reader will win this lovely classic vase this week.

marimekko apronAnd to double the fun, FinnStyle also is offering a second prize for a second reader: a Marimekko apron of your choice. This Kesatori design is my perky favorite — but I count 8 styles of Marimekko aprons, with a total of 14 possible colors. Continue on for instructions on how to enter to win our one of our two giveaways this week –>

Comment to win an Aalto vase or Marimekko apron
from FinnStyle.com

The rules:

  • There will be two winners: One winner of a small Aalto Savoy vase (value: $50), the other, of a Marimekko apron of your choice (value: $43).
  • To enter the contest, make a Comment answering the question, “What are the colors in your kitchen?” You’d want an apron to coordinate, of course!
  • I’ll choose the winner by Random Number Generator Tues. morning-ish, Nov. 22.
  • You must reply to my email within 7 days, or else I move on to the next in line. I’m not chasing you. Make sure your email is correct.
  • U.S. only.
Thank you, FinnStyle!

The colors in my kitchen change from time to time, but are currently avocado and orange. My home was built in 1952 and the kitchen has remained true to the 50’s…still have the original cabinets and a cool stainless tappan double oven – I love them! We are getting ready to remove the wall between the kitchen and dining room though, so changes are on the way. Exciting!

My kitchen color palette features cool colors, gray and white. I chose the palette based on the flooring – Marmoleum click lock that I bought on sale, in a medium-deep gray/lavendar. I kept the original hand-made plywood cabinets, they’re painted fresh white with simple shiny chrome retro hardware. The walls are a soft dove gray. The pantry shelving and vintage louvered doors are white like the cabinetry. My counters are a gorgeous marble tile in white, gray and beige (tile purchase was a great find on Craigslist!) with the tile laid on the diagonal. The appliances are classic black. The kitchen island is white with a butcher block top. The butcher block warms up the kitchen. I have vintage 1950s plates hanging in the kitchen, featuring tropical birds and plants, and a painting with violet, purple, red and pink, that also adds a splash of color. On the counter, a few vintage chrome small appliances and a vintage style scalloped white china cake stand. I love the cool, fresh, clean and open feel that this color palette brings to the kitchen.

in our kitchen, the original wood cabinets are painted teal, and accent colors include red, peach, and black.

The colors in my kitchen are “flat” beige walls with cream trim…BORING! But we are renting, therefore, those were not my choices! However, the colors in my *dream* ‘retro’ kitchen are “April Sky” (Benjamin Moore 1969 Color Festival) with one wall in a Vintage Vera or a Marimekko paper, black and white linoleum floors (in a tesselate pattern) and Boomerang laminate from Formica (in Bianco) countertops. Yummy!

Hi Pam…my kitchen is Avocado and turquoise with black and white . All based off of a Taylorstone “Cathay” plate.

What are the colors in my kitchen? I have a plum/gray color on the walls, old 70s Rutt offwhite cabinets and a fun new linoleum floor featured on RetroRenovation earlier this year! Accents of sky blue and perky chartreuse and echoes of same colors in fiesta ware dishes! It was a minimalist update of 35 year old kitchen that everybody now loves to be in!

Just finished renovating our mid-century kitchen to make it more functional; colors are desert southwest inspired with a burnt formica counter top, a mottled mustard and rust marmoleum floor, birch cabinets and an undecided wall color — still sorting that out!

Cream backsplash, moss green countertop, oak cabinets, white appliances. Boring enough to win? *bats eyelashes prettily*

My kitchen is a work in progress. So are my thoughts for it. Right now, I envision a brightly lit kitchen with sunny yellow accents. We live in the woods so light and bright are highly desirable.
