Midcentury furniture mega sale in Philadelphia this Sunday – 53 photos!

Kate - Updated: August 5, 2013

Retro Renovation stopped publishing in 2021; these stories remain for historical information, as potential continued resources, and for archival purposes.

vintage furnitureThanks to reader Jennifer who tipped Pam off — via our Facebook fan page — to this massive mid century, retro and vintage furniture sale this Sunday in Philadelphia. I envy anyone who lives close enough to attend. As I read their craigslist post (now gone) and looked at the photos of what is included for sale in this 3,ooo square-foot space, I had to sop up the drool coming from my mouth! Heidi — one of the people in charge of this sale — said that all of these treasures have come from several estates, and they are having this sale to “clean house” and make room in their building. This sale is only three hours long– I predict it will be a madhouse. Thanks to Heidi for letting us feature these photos so everyone across the Retro Renovation Nation could ogle them enviously.

Broyhill Brasilia hutch

I have a gorgeous Broyhill Brasilia hutch just like the one above — hopefully on Sunday this classic beauty will find a good home.

Broyhill Brasilia Commodes

Ditto on those Broyhill Brasilia commodes! It looks like they might have a few pairs at the sale…

If a lot of these pieces are priced close-ish to the “starting prices” listed in the ad, then there may be some good deals. The ad says:

Whatever you need for your home that’s functional or decorative, we probably have it! Lot’s of fun trinkets and collectibles to sift through. Something for every budget
Eames – Saarinen – Lane – Drexel – George Nelson – American of Martinsville – and more

Credenzas (from $250), dining tables (from $125), dining chair sets (from $50 p/chair), lounge chairs (from $75), office chairs (from $25), dressers (from $100), hutches (from $250), end tables (from $75), coffee tables (from $125), nightstands (from $125)
Table lamps, floor lamps and chandeliers (from $25)
Huge range of art from framed museum posters to original art for collectors ($1-500)

I think it’s Bassett Mayan, not Aztec. I have the 9 drawer dresser, in fact, it was my first piece that I collected. I love it. I need more!

Holey moley! I probably couldn’t afford any of this but if I lived closer I would absolutely go just to admire and drool over everything! Thanks for sharing, what a goldmine of mid century awesomeness!

Yes, that is a Drexel Declaration dresser. I have a set in my master bedroom, and I love it. I have been watching for a larger dresser for myself, and the one pictured would be perfect. Too bad I’m in Illinois…

Um, I think I NEED that silver chair! Who wants to drive it to Texas for me? And that right angled Lane table on three legs…insane! Happy shopping for those that are going!

I have that very same Thonet Bentwood rocker in our bedroom and my designer/contractor thinks it lends a “dated” look to the room. I don’t think he meant that in a good way, lol. To me, that is a ’70’s look which is when we acquired it new. I have to say I still like it, though. Thanks for all the wonderful pictures!

Actually, Thonet introduced that rocker in 1882.

Woot! Just moved to Philly area a month ago – I’m a first time home buyer of a 1950 home and have no furniture! Awesome!

If only I had scads of money, lived in Philly, and had a house to put all that stuff in, I would so be there! So many things there to love! Unfortunately, I’m broke, live in KY, and have a stupid turn of the century house. 🙁

I know all this stuff is beautiful, but keep in mind the mantra of this blog is to “Love the House You are In” and be content with what you have!

The ‘Tiki-bling’ dresser and chest of drawers is the Bassett Aztec line from the early 1960s.

Ohhh thanks for the ID on those awesome Tiki dressers BlueJay!

No problem. I have some brochures from Bassett from the early 60s; they had some interesting lines out! They detail the Aztec line as well.

Wow that sounds cool! We’d love to see those — and share them on the blog — if you are able to scan/email them! If so, send them my way: retrorenovationkate [at] gmail [dot] com 🙂

The collection is actually called “Mayan” from Bassett.

I thought it was called Mayan too, but the Bassett brochure says otherwise. It’s called the Aztec line and it’s finished in a Mayan Walnut finish.
