Sophisticated flower power decor in this Palm Desert 1967 time capsule house

Kate - Updated: August 22, 2020

Retro Renovation stopped publishing in 2021; these stories remain for historical information, as potential continued resources, and for archival purposes.

palm desert flower power houseOur 2013 Retro Renovation Color of the Year is Drexel Premier Chapter One Flower Power Rich Lime Green… so heck to the yeah, it was good to hear from reader Rebecca, who recently captured many fantabulous photos of a 1967 time capsule home on a home tour in Palm Desert, California. This house is absolutely dreamy — Lookie that little daffodil lamp in the bathroom — bulbs in the bulbs! And wait until you see the television set.

This lovely home was designer-decorated in the early 1970s — all matchy matchy confection perfection. This collage that Kate made, from some of the photos on Rebecca’s blog Mid-Century Modern Remodel [<–go see ’em] only hints at the loveliness in this space.

When Rebecca emailed me, she wrote:

Hello Pam,

I thought you would get a kick out of this time capsule home I stumbled across in the desert @ Palm Springs Modernism Week. It wasn’t advertised at all and kind of tacked on to a “Designer Home Showcase” tour of newly decorated homes.  That green is my favorite color too. I literally gasped when I stepped inside. The second bathroom foil wallpaper reminded me of your office patchwork. Even the colors!

Happy Friday!!!!!
Rebecca

Thank you, Rebecca, for thinking to share your luscious discovery here — and thank you, for giving us permission to use some of your photos to make an enticing collage. Readers — head over to Rebecca’s blog to see all the photos. And may the luck o’ the Irish be with you.

My, that was fun! The follow-through on a concept is brilliant.

WOW! I love that green wallpaper most of all. And the kitchen… oh my, the kitchen!

If the 1971 time capsule home we purchased had been this fabulous and in such amazing shape we wouldn’t have touched a thing! We had foil wallpaper and it was totally bananas op art but it was moldy and torn 🙁 so it had to go. This place is absolutely fabulous!

I am speechless. This condo is totally amazing! My ’77 wedding everyday dishes (white with yellow/green daffodils) would have been perfect. The designer must feel such pride that all the owners took such good care of everything.

So fabulous. Some of those rooms (hello, kitchen and bathroom!) and like something straight out of decorating books from that era. Love those punches of color and wow, that bathroom that’s open to the outside.

Holy mackerel, I should have looked at all of the photos on Rebecca’s blog before commenting. The condo is so amazingly bright, light, and cheerful. Somehow the decor finds a balance between outrageous and sophisticated. The pink bathroom positively hurt my eyes to look at but I couldn’t turn away.

Good morning Pam and Happy Friday! Isn’t it all so amazing? I remember how stunned I was the day I walked into this condo in beautiful Marrakesh. Thanks very much for sharing your readers.

Before the day at work got very busy, I thought I’d take a peek at RR. Whoa Nelly! Jump over to that site and look at those pictures. They will give you a blast of spring with all that flower power color. The back story! (don’t want to spoil it)
Pam, there’s a wallpaper company out there that’s going to be steamed when they catch wind of your infringement of design copyright.

“Steamed”? Is that a wallpaper joke! At first your comment freaked me out… I was all worried, like “Whadid I do?” Then I figured: Your comparing the crazy acid trip patchwork wallpaper in the bathroom with the crazy acid trip patchwork wallpaper in my office! 🙂

How pristine and lovely! I remember those colors. The patchwork wallpaper does look like Pam’s office wallpaper. Such fun to see.

We toured this home during Modernism Week as well, and it was one of my favorites! So many amazing details, including awesome wallpaper throughout. I have to say, however, the original pinch pleat drapes in bold green& white print fabric were the show stealer for me, however!
