[Entries now closed] Win an autographed copy of Sven Kirsten and Otto von Stroheim’s new book, The Art of Tiki

Pam Kueber - Updated: April 13, 2020

Retro Renovation stopped publishing in 2021; these stories remain for historical information, as potential continued resources, and for archival purposes.

Contest now over. Congratulations to winner Jennie!! Thanks, everyone, for playing! ENTRIES NOW CLOSED.

The main reason for my recent Grand LA Tiki Adventure was to see the opening of The Art of the Tiki exhibit. The exhibit was fabulous, and the opening night party was insane! There is a hardcover book to go-with, and I picked up an extra copy to go a giveaway here on the blog. And of course, I had it autographed by Sven and Otto! Read on for entry details.

Sven wrote the book, there are tons of great photos, and there are essays by Shag, Otto and Jordan Reichek. Otto also gets author credit because he curated the exhibit. I have not had time to read my copy yet, but it looks like a must-have addition to the super-collectible Sven Kirsten library of titles!

The book’s description, from the publisher Last Gasp Books:

The Art of Tiki is a passionate study of the Tiki idol as an art form. For the first time, contemporary Tiki art is united and presented equally with what inspired it, original mid-century Polynesian pop. Author Sven Kirsten combines his first-hand experiences in exploring the birth of Tiki style with his intimate knowledge of the Tiki Revival, painting a vivid, visually arresting portrait of a unique, always new art genre. The Art of Tiki is published in conjunction with the 20th Anniversary Tiki Art Exhibition at La luz de Jesus Gallery in Los Angeles.

The thing around my house that’s making me the happiest is my newly restored Drexel dining set from my grandma

My living room is making me happy. We got some new rugs, a paisley club chair, and a chesterfield couch with track arms plus a couple of white faux fur throw pillows. Very 1970s! The best part is the three vintage Russell Woodard spun fiberglass plant stands we scored on Craigslist. We mixed retro with new and the result is tasty and satisfying.

After having to sell our fabulous ’69 Daylight Atomic Ranch we landed on the Columbia River in a floating home. It’s only 800 square feet but one of the things we most treasure about it is a lil alcove area just inside the doorway where we created a terrific Tiki bar. Thanks Pam, et. al, for all the wonderful design and remodel ideas over the years.

The thing that makes me happiest about my house is the huge front room windows that let in all the beautiful fall colors in our front yard

The thing that is making me most happy about my current home is the fact that I am getting ready to list it! That’s right, I am currently on the hunt for a sweet MCM to renovate and make my own. This is a task easier said than done. It is really hard to find an MCM in a neighborhood which has both retained its value AND hasnt been completely updated with no $$ room for reno. Fingers crossed!

I recently had a milestone birthday and treated myself to the “vintage” green, pedestal vornado fan. It is the newest addition to my 1960’s themed, aqua/blue bedroom. I just put it together yesterday!
