[Entries now closed] Win an autographed copy of Sven Kirsten and Otto von Stroheim’s new book, The Art of Tiki

Pam Kueber - Updated: April 13, 2020

Retro Renovation stopped publishing in 2021; these stories remain for historical information, as potential continued resources, and for archival purposes.

Contest now over. Congratulations to winner Jennie!! Thanks, everyone, for playing! ENTRIES NOW CLOSED.

The main reason for my recent Grand LA Tiki Adventure was to see the opening of The Art of the Tiki exhibit. The exhibit was fabulous, and the opening night party was insane! There is a hardcover book to go-with, and I picked up an extra copy to go a giveaway here on the blog. And of course, I had it autographed by Sven and Otto! Read on for entry details.

Sven wrote the book, there are tons of great photos, and there are essays by Shag, Otto and Jordan Reichek. Otto also gets author credit because he curated the exhibit. I have not had time to read my copy yet, but it looks like a must-have addition to the super-collectible Sven Kirsten library of titles!

The book’s description, from the publisher Last Gasp Books:

The Art of Tiki is a passionate study of the Tiki idol as an art form. For the first time, contemporary Tiki art is united and presented equally with what inspired it, original mid-century Polynesian pop. Author Sven Kirsten combines his first-hand experiences in exploring the birth of Tiki style with his intimate knowledge of the Tiki Revival, painting a vivid, visually arresting portrait of a unique, always new art genre. The Art of Tiki is published in conjunction with the 20th Anniversary Tiki Art Exhibition at La luz de Jesus Gallery in Los Angeles.

My house in general makes me very happy! But my tiki bar in the backyard is definitely a good perk to have!

What makes me happiest about my house now? Just remodeled the laundry room. I had a Shag designed t-shirt, from 2015 Modernism Week, got it with tickets to Pinball Mania, it didn’t fit so I never wore it.
Decided to frame it and display in the new laundry room. It looks fantastic!

I just got a restored pretty good shape 1947 Hawaii Pinball machine for my Tiki room. So very excited!

Just purchased a mid-century modest house in Boise, ID (moved in a month ago) and my girlfriend and I are loving making it our own and bringing as much mid-century kitsch back into the place as we can afford. Your website is a constant source of inspiration. Keep up the great work!

My house was built in 1991, but I’ve slowly transformed it with mid-century treasures. Right now, I’m loving my vintage Halloween and my owls (they come out in the fall ????).

What makes me happy about my house is who lives in my house with me – my family and our 4-legged critters, too! But I do love my bright blue kitchen…

What’s making me happiest about my house right now is sitting in the glass fronted living room with one of our cats beside me, watching the morning light fill the sky…
