A grasscloth bamboo ceiling for my home tiki bar, The Mahalo Lounge

Pam Kueber - Updated: August 18, 2021

Retro Renovation stopped publishing in 2021; these stories remain for historical information, as potential continued resources, and for archival purposes.

So when I asked readers for advice on which ceiling treatment to choose for my Mahalo Lounge, reader Maria Gamalski replied, all skeptical given past experience:

Hahahaha I’m not falling for this again! You had us agonizing over swatches in shades of red/orange/coral for the sectional and you went w/green that wasn’t even presented as as an option……. you pick!????

I responded:

I hope you are not angry at me! I go through an arduous decision-making process. Hey: I REALLY am going to use one of these!

But. Umm. Then. Golly….

What can I say? I went to California on a Grand LA Tiki Adventure and decided — I need more tiki, less chic. Then, the Retro Decorating Gods timely delivered unto me gorgeous vintage grasscloth on ebay.

It’s not as if… my head and neck and back and shoulders and hands (and pocketbook) ain’t payin’ the price, getting this stuff cut into perfect 34.5″ squares then up onto the ceiling all by my lonely.

  • Will I finish my Mahalo Lounge by the end of this year. Or, ever? Your guess is as good as mine.

All I can say is “Fantastic!” I couldn’t embrace any of the wallpapers and feel this is the perfect solution for your ceiling. I’m sure you’re ecstatic with the gorgeous results! But I can’t imagine the effort to install it alone! 🙂

I am pleased you went with this instead of the other. I must admit I was disappointed when a grass cloth like this one was not considered in the beginning because I thought it should really be more “hut like” in keeping with my memories. I had chosen something that would resemble this effect the best out of the choices.

Anxious to see the finished project…..I know it will be amazing!

Pam, it looks amazing. What a great idea to set the grasscloth at angles. I guess you got the idea from your kitchen floor. My back aches just looking at it. Gory detais-can’t wait.

Yes, I did not want the bamboo to run in just one direction. Also, I did everything on a diamond to avoid parsing everything into “squares”. Now there’s movement … which is not necessarily what I would want in all situations, but works in this case. In general, I don’t personally like diamond-tesselation on floors — I like to feel the square of the room.

The heavier texture of the grasscloth really works here.

    Pamela,
    PERFECT…!
    I give it a 10!
Walking away from projects and then, coming back to them sheds new attitudes.
Share where you got this material Pamela. THANKS!

Thank you, I am pretty darned psyched. I’ll do a follow up story (at some point haha) with more details about why I changed my mind, and about the process.

Thank you! I really did buy a buncha Moby Dick wallpaper! Now, what will I do with THAT?!

Oh, well, I really liked the maps. That was an option, right? But my kids tell me that I need to buy a new sofa instead of re-upholstering the vintage one, so you can’t please everyone. You have please yourself.

Thanks, linda. I really liked the maps too!

There was another reason I ultimately went with the grasscloth though — I’ll followup with more details in a bit!

Very nice! I thought we were due for a lounge update. The alternating striations makes for a great basket weave pattern. You must explain the process so we can all feel your pain.
Yes, I remember Maria’s post and it made me laugh when I first read it.

I felt bad about the psych! that Maria pointed out. I REALLY bought the Moby Dick wallpaper. But then. Oopsy.

Much, much, better choice. Maybe your friend (who’s name escapes me, sorry) come round and give you a hand?

Denise. Nope. Just moi. And it is a BEAR. Will post followup explaining gory details and if yer lucky, me in a red polka dot shower cap to fend off drips, err rain, from the pre-pasted liner paper that goes under.

Wow Pam, that is the perfect choice. It looks fantastic. Are you a Libra? (ha ha).
