Mid century modern sofas, sectionals and chairs — Made in the U.S.A. by Younger Furniture

mid-century-style-sofa-and-loveseat-younger-furnitureIn yesterday’s story about Dave and Kristin’s fabulous mid-century living room, we got our first peek at some mid-century modern style sofa and chairs from Younger Furniture. Dave also mentioned this furniture was made in the U.S. — a big “want” of many readers. So, I jumped online to take a look at the whole line of furniture — and it looks great. Above: The ala Dick van Dyke line, just recently introduced.  tufted-single-back-sofa-younger-furniture

There is a good selection of mid-century modern styles — with a variety of backs, arms and seat cushion variations to choose from. Importantly: The scale appears to be right! Look at the measurements for each piece — they are not oversized… no 40″ seats or backs. They are long and low and compact — just like our mid century jewel box houses.

There are sectionals.

The “lounge” seems to be a de rigeur design feature, these days.

And chairs. Lots to choose from, actually.

small upholstered barrel chairI really quite like little upholstered pieces like this. Reminds me of my orange chairs:

I especially really like this cute little club chair, with rolled arms, pleated skirt and soft cushion back. It’s waaaay mid-century – modest — not modern!

And upholstered headboards.

The Younger Furniture website describes the company, saying: “After working in the furniture industry for 20 years, Mike Younger founded Younger Furniture in 1989. Since the day Mike opened the doors, Younger has been commited to making high quality custom furniture from start to finish in North Carolina. Younger is dedicated to creating style, quality and comfort in the form of furniture.” No prices are listed online — but there is good navigation that gets you right to retailers in your area. Hi All,
drats….I wish I had known about this company before buying a sofa from Thomasville that is very 50s looking but I don’t love it. These would be much better in my home. Can you do a blog about good places for buying MCM dining room tables? I need one for my new Saarinen chairs! Maybe will check out Danco.

I also went to the Younger website immediately after the post and found that I could find the brand at our Thomasville Store in Albuquerque, NM. Most likely it will have to be a special order but the option is available. I also found a buffet that would look OK with my Heywood Wakefield dining room table and chairs at Thomasville, again a special order. After I told the salesman what I was looking for he pulled out some brochures for me. So keep that in mind when furniture shopping, there are options available. If you don’t see what you are looking for on the showroom floor, just ask.

Thank you for sharing this resource! I’ve just about given up trying to find a vintage couch that goes well with some mid-century chairs I inherited. Younger appears to have several options that may work.

I am pretty sure these are the most beautiful sofas and chairs I’ve ever seen. I might have to “spill” red wine onto our sofa now…lol 😉

Yes they are comfortably firm, you sit on them rather than in them. Just was introduced to Younger today and was very impressed with their style, comfort, and value.

  5. Heather says:

I am currently trying to find a specific Younger sofa to sit on and try out, but the only place in my state that carries that brand, only has 1 style in stock. One I don’t like. I’m considering ordering one without having first tried it, but am terrified to do so.

Is there anyone here who can give their testimonial as to the quality and comfort (this being key) to their Younger sofa? Like…maybe months or a year after purchasing?

Including the model # you bought would be helpful as well. 🙂

I ordered the “Miller” sectional from Younger last week. It is the 4th sofa from the top. Can’t wait to get it. We tried out the “apartment” version, which is the Haviland, and we were really impressed. I’ve tried and tried to find stuff but there really is nothing like it for the same price. Not to mention the fact that it’s made here in the US. Can’t beat that!

I *think* I’ve got a Younger couch and chair, the Michael collection, that I bought from Design Within Reach maybe 6(+) years ago when there was more money. The cushion on my couch isn’t quite as puffy as the pics, but the chair cushion is well lofted. I absolutely love the chair and sofa, but I’m admittedly gentle with my furniture and I don’t let my boys jump on them. I know Macy’s has a line very similar to the Michael collection.
