Update: Random number picked; winner has been sent an email; comments closed. Thanks, everyone, for playing. Remember — new contest every month! Kara was the winner of our January contest to win a Love The House You’re In Collage — and that’s her mid-century cutie, above — as immortalized by collage artist extraordinaire Mel Kolstad. To win our February contest, all you have to do is:
Leave a Comment answering the question, “What year was your house built?” If you want to leave a tidbit on its style, that would be cool, too. Please read all the rules here before entering, they all apply.
This month’s contest rewards DAILY readers — I’ll pick a winner late Friday night. Yay on all of you who check in daily!
“I just love Kara’s house! She was very thorough – she included “before” photos as well and you can see how beautiful her house is now! I used real wood veneer for the fence and wood grain paper for the door. The tree was done using tiny punched circles and the sky is actually handmade paper. I did the house in a paper I found that was the PERFECT color!”
Thanks, Mel! Read more about her work on her cool blog, Ephemeraology.

Buying your first home can be a scary thing! But my 1956 model home made me feel…well….right at home! I was so excited this past Halloween because all of my neighbors were on their front porch handing out candy, so it was very conducive to introductions! That how I discovered that my home was actually the model home in the area! My 84 year old neighbor was telling me stories about how he was working at the Nutone Factory here in Cincinnati at the time and fell in love with the neighborhood which at the time was called Amber Acres, playing on the fact that its right next to Amberley Village, a then and now great neighborhood full of Mid-Century marvels! He also told me stories about Block Parties they used to have, and about how the man who built these homes would come door to door with his tool belt for years after the homes were built and fix little things here and there.
All I can say is, talk to your neighbors! Who knows what great stories they may have about the home you live in! Its because of all these little details he was able to share with me, that I can truly love the house im in!

Wow, that is amazing: The builder going door-to-door for years after! What a wonderful place!

My family and I live in (and love!) a 1962 ranch home that includes three colorful original bathrooms (pink, blue, and almond/gold), a flagstone fireplace, real wood paneling (under some boring white paint…a someday project), and a 1968 Frigidaire Flair.

I just bought my first home and it is a 1927 colonial. It even has a pirate ship stained glass window! I am very thankful that the previous owned lefted me a pink refrigerator and a double drainboard sink 🙂

We are getting acquainted with a tiny mid-century modest home in a cute little town. On our street is a two hundred year old antebellum former plantation house, us, many other ’50s era ranches, some lovely early 20th century bungalows, and a few smaller McMansions.
Our house came with the original pink bathroom…and the original furnace. Only one of these things is exciting in the good way.

I have to admit that I live in a 1905 Craftsman house. The house is almost totally original, but our kitchen is 1950s-ish. So, does that count? We have the original quartersawn cabinets, but otherwise it has been “updated” five decades. I discovered your website when I was looking for a sink, and because of what I found here, I was able to talk my husband into a sink with a hudee. Our house is beautiful, but serious. You gotta have one fun room, right?! Thanks so much!

1950 ranch in Atlanta…. I think it definitely qualifies as “mid century modest.” It was about 1100 sq. ft. originally but has had some additions over the years to make it 1300 sq. ft. I am currently trying to gather all the parts and pieces to put the hall bath back to its original-style glory… I’m building a pink bathroom after the previous owners gutted and “updated” it!

Hey…our house started out 1100 feet as well, then with a fifties addition went to 1300. It’s the perfect size, don’t you think?
