It’s time again to enter to win “Love the House You’re In” custom collage by Mel Kolstad. Her latest creation — for last month’s winner, Stacey — is above. Isn’t it amazing…? Imagine what she could do with your house — it’s easy peasy to enter….
To enter this month’s contest, leave a Comment answering the question:
What color paint (or wallpaper design) is on your kitchen walls right now? Optional: Are you happy with it? Please read all the rules here before entering, they all apply.
Just like last month — this contest rewards regular readers, because I’m only leaving it open for 48 hours. I’ll pick a winner on Tuesday morning.
Meanwhile, here is what Mel had to say about her latest creation:
Look at this little gem of a house! When Stacey sent me the photos, I knew instantly how I was going to create the collage. The house and the surroundings have a very “ecclesiastical” feel to them – that’s the only way I can describe it. There is just something so peaceful about this place, which is why I used the calming greens and browns to highlight the house, along with the “overcast” sky. The tiny stones were a wonderful challenge to recreate, too! So there you have it. I don’t want to play favorites but this house was REALLY REALLY fun to do! 😀
Thank you, Ms. Mel. You can experience more of Mel’s world at her blog: Ephemeraology

My kitchen is white…white walls, white laminate cabinets white tile counter tops. It is from the late 70’s and was like this when we bought the house about 7 yrs. ago. We have plans to change it, but just isn’t in the budget. It was quite the kitchen when it was done in the ’70s and is still not too bad, as it fits with the contemporary lines of the house. I would still love to update it , somewhat.

Sigh…white (really white) and the wall where our window is, a sorta sage green. Would love to redo the kitchen, but we are redoing our bedroom and bathroom, so one project at a time. C’mon lottery…

Everyting is White white to compliment my 1948 Magic Chef stove with the big chrome bumper thing holding the clock. i have lots of Fiesta ware and colorful dishes displayed.
I sent u a picture a few months ago but have never seen it on the blog.

as you know, i am in the midst of re-painting our cabinets with rustoleum cabinet transformations system. when we moved in we fell in love with the original wood panelling , the nu tone fan, the brick wall surrounding the built in modern maid and much more, but the cabinet color and wall color left much to be desired. everything was brown, brown and more brown. so… the cabinets are now black (love!) and the walls have been painted an orange based red. normally i wouldn’t have chosen the red and black theme but it seems to fit in quite well with the rest of the painting we have done in this open floor plan MCM wonder:) crossing my fingers!!!

Hi Pam,
Love reading your site. First time to comment. I grew up in a 1960’s ranch home and now my husband and I live in his grandparent’s home built about 1963. Ranch to ranch. Anyhow, our kitchen has real wood paneling in a honey gold color and between the top cabinets and above the backsplash it is striped wallpaper from the Bob Timberlake Collection in 90’s burgundy, navy and hunter green with smaller stripes of honey gold, and mauve. I think we ripped out the white with gold speckled formica backsplash when we remodeled the kitchen. Can’t remember exactly what the backsplash was. Our countertops are a blackberry color (think blackberry pie) with little tiny specks in grays and mauves. Thought the speckled formica would be an update from the gold speckles. We also took away the honey gold cabinet doors and replaced them with white arched paneled doors. Our cabinets weren’t anything special other than being big and roomy. It’s probably time for a kitchen redo.

My kitchen walls are a very specific blue–a blue that means a great deal to me. For several years I drove a powder/duck-egg blue 1961 Plymouth Valiant, and it was as important as my right arm. From estate sale to junk shop, swap meet to work at the antique shop, this battered old Valiant would start every single time, jump right into gear when the buttons were pushed (gotta love a push-button automatic!), get 25 MPG and go through the hottest summer or snowiest winter without missing a beat. Eventually, she wore out and I had to move on. But I kept pictures, and when we bought this house, since I do the majority of the cooking, I wanted what I considered a cheerful and soothing color on the walls. Therefore, my kitchen is 1961 Plymouth Valiant Blue–with a clock made from a saved hubcap.

Awesome!!
An old car sure can make life more beautiful, great idea making the kitchen to match it so you can feel like it hasn’t really left you. Love the hubcap clock idea for the kitchen.

Our kitchen has very little paint up on the walls– just what’s on the soffit above the cabinets. It’s currently the same peachy color as the rest of the walls in the house. I hardly notice it in the kitchen, so I suppose I’m happy with it. 🙂
The cabinets are blonde oak, stained at some point in time to red oak. I like it well enough to not change it.
The wall between the counter and the cabinets is done in an 80’s faux-marble Formica. That I’m not so happy with, but it’s in such phenomenal shape that I can’t bring myself to rip it out. Trying to keep with the Mid-Century Modest tradition that our 1963 ranch was built in, you know? If it ain’t broke, I ought to not make myself broke trying to gussy it up.
But as soon as a turkey carving accident makes the Formica unusable, I’m taking it off!

When Jan (my realtor) and I walked into (what would become) my home, it was thru the mudroom, up two steps, and into the kitchen – the heart of the home. It was just like my grandma’s; the plain pine cupboards, the “skylark” Formica counter and stainless edging, and a pale green and white scheme. Completely original and unchanged from the day it was built
I’ve lived here now for 5 months, and what started as a “I can change this” and “modify that” has become “ahhh…” Yes I will have to repaint; the white is dingy from thousands of meals cooked, but I’m not going to make any changes but to renew the existing colors. I feel good every time I cook, Its a happy little mid-century kitchen

I love this story! Isn’t that the way our homes should always make us feel?!!!

We did our kitchen to look like a 50’s diner. Bright blue walls with black accents, brushed steel appliances and a genuine diner booth in shiny blue speckled vinyl. Love it…and so does everyone who sees it!
