Update: Entries (comments) on this story are now closed. Congratulations to winners Renee (vase) and Melissa (apron) — I done spun the random number generator, and their number came up. Prizes awarded! Thanks, everyone, for playing — how much fun to read about everyone’s kitchens! Can you believe it, this Savoy vase, designed by Alvar Aalto, has been in continuous production since 1936 — that’s 75 years. Courtesy of sponsor FinnStyle.com, one reader will win this lovely classic vase this week.
And to double the fun, FinnStyle also is offering a second prize for a second reader: a Marimekko apron of your choice. This Kesatori design is my perky favorite — but I count 8 styles of Marimekko aprons, with a total of 14 possible colors. Continue on for instructions on how to enter to win our one of our two giveaways this week –>
Comment to win an Aalto vase or Marimekko apron

My kitchen (house I grew up in) has 1946 linoleum in a dark green speckle design with a gray border (and a special tile set in the center with a teapot design in brick red, my dad paid an extra 1$ for that one when it was installed). None too healthy any more as it’s chipping, but I love it. The walls are knotty pine but after so many years were dark and sorta stained, so I’ve been priming it and painting over it a light yellow-y white. Counters? Don’t have ’em, but the sink has the original bright yellow Formica-looking surround!

Vintage white cabinets, orange walls, vintage white, salmon, grey countertops.

Light yellow walls, white ceramic tile floor, stainless appliances, light maple cupboards. Not quite matching the 1959 original blue and pink bathroom (with original pink toilet!) complete with tile on the ceiling. It’s pretty cool, but my kitchen is nice too 🙂

Let’s see… for the last 12 years, and three houses, my kitchen colors have been orange, red, yellow and avocado green (sometimes there’s some brown thrown in for a neutral).

Oh, did I not like my kitchen or my 70’s ranch! Then I got into turning the place into a mid century look, albeit on a very limited budget (since getting laid off I had lots of time to think…sigh!). Repainted the horrible walnut stained kitchen cabinets a warm ivory color, put on new hardware and accented in yellow all over. Love it! Would love that apron or the vase!

My kitchen has Honey Cream (Valspar) walls, original honey maple cabinets that are fabulous! My counter top and back splash are pale green small speckle Formica.
The double oven and the stove top (push button controls) all original, are white, so I did the dishwasher and fridge in white. We were so lucky to find this fabulous 1950 house that had only one previous owner, a single woman, who was a professor at the local university and traveled extensively. The house was barely lived in. I think it is so important in mid-century homes to try to maintain as much of the integrity of the home as possible. I love my sky blue tiled and my pink tiled bathrooms and wouldn’t change them for the world. My opinion is that if one drives up to an obvious mid-century home and the inside looks like 2011, the integrity and era of the home is lost.

It’s a blustery November day outside but bright and cheery in my near original 1964 post ‘n beam kitchen. The walls are sunny yellow, countertops Arborite Ole Fiesta, and flooring tomato red Marmoleum. The original cabinetry is a warm honey-toned Honduran Mahogany. A colourful Marimekko pinny would be right at home!

I have a classic Coca Cola red, white and black kitchen. The top half of the walls are bright Coca Cola Red, the strip of the top of the wainscoting is black, and the bottom of the wainscoting is white. My entire kitchen has a 1950’s diner feel to it. I have knotty pine/cherry oak colored cabinetry all around. Pam herself had made a comment on a pic I posted that it was a great kitchen 😉 I absolutely love this kitchen. It has personality, it has history (I own a 1900 bungalow with a 1960’s renovation), and it’s BIG. I love it. I have vintage Coca Cola ads displayed throughout, as well as my original, hard to find glass bottles. I am also a bargain shopper–as the chairs at the little round eat-in part of the kitchen I got for only $40-4 chairs!!
I am a lover of aprons and would adore a Marimekko to match my kitchen that I spend so much time in. Happy renovating to all!!

What an exciting giveaway!! My kitchen is Behr’s “Pale Daffodil.” I love how retro the shade of yellow is. 🙂 My cabinets are white and I have original GE appliances (I live in a 1950s rancher).
