pam kueber - Updated: November 28, 2011

Retro Renovation stopped publishing in 2021; these stories remain for historical information, as potential continued resources, and for archival purposes.

alvar aalto 1936 vaseUpdate: Entries (comments) on this story are now closed. Congratulations to winners Renee (vase) and Melissa (apron) — I done spun the random number generator, and their number came up. Prizes awarded! Thanks, everyone, for playing — how much fun to read about everyone’s kitchens! Can you believe it, this Savoy vase, designed by Alvar Aalto, has been in continuous production since 1936 — that’s 75 years. Courtesy of sponsor FinnStyle.com, one reader will win this lovely classic vase this week.

marimekko apronAnd to double the fun, FinnStyle also is offering a second prize for a second reader: a Marimekko apron of your choice. This Kesatori design is my perky favorite — but I count 8 styles of Marimekko aprons, with a total of 14 possible colors. Continue on for instructions on how to enter to win our one of our two giveaways this week –>

Comment to win an Aalto vase or Marimekko apron
from FinnStyle.com

The rules:

  • There will be two winners: One winner of a small Aalto Savoy vase (value: $50), the other, of a Marimekko apron of your choice (value: $43).
  • To enter the contest, make a Comment answering the question, “What are the colors in your kitchen?” You’d want an apron to coordinate, of course!
  • I’ll choose the winner by Random Number Generator Tues. morning-ish, Nov. 22.
  • You must reply to my email within 7 days, or else I move on to the next in line. I’m not chasing you. Make sure your email is correct.
  • U.S. only.
Thank you, FinnStyle!

We’re all grey, black, white and tan in our 1937 streamline modern kitchen. Anything will go, including the beautiful vase…just one year older than our house! 😉

colors are brown cabinets and ceiling, red ’50s vinyl floor, turquoise countertop with accents of light tan and black. Retro Western would best describe it. Went with several reader’s suggestions from the blog but most in love with the two tone tan cowboy “toille-like” wallpaper above the rough cut wood wainscotting and the Time mag. ad for coffee featuring rodeo cowboy drinking coffee framed in black.

Our kitchen is the original minty green color with the original birch blond cabinets and silver hardware. The floor was put in the early 70’s and is a nice green. The countertops on the built in table and desk is the marbly beige and after a fire in the kitchen they put in a white formica with a very pale light green design in it. It is a U shaped kitchen with the U formed around a built in table.

My house was built in 1906, but my kitchen comes from the 1950s, I believe. The cabinets are painted Sherwood Green from Benjamin Moore and were made by i-XL in Goshen, Indiana (according to a sticker), and the walls are white. The appliances were all recently replaced by the previous owner, except the wall oven, which appears to be from the 50s (Roper). My curtains are terra-cotta and the floors are painted espresso. It’s a very cozy kitchen.

My kitchen is light wood tones with brown and black granite — nice, if a bit dull. But, we are building a cabin, and that kitchen will be knotty pine! I’m still trying to talk my husband into turquoise counters.

My kitchen features 1957 GE turquoise appliances. I have a stainless steel sink with an original Food Center with blender. My vinyl flooring is charcoal and white. I painted my original cabinets with chalkboard paint and created a slate look by rubbing the chalk all over and working it in. It looks amazing. The cabinet latches are stainless steel. I placed black and white Bauer pottery on the top ledge of the cabinets. The countertops are still a work in progress, as I have not yet decided on a material to replace the formica.

I have original 50’s cabinets, painted bright white, and the original red laminate counter with aluminum trim. We pulled up five layers of linoleum to find a beautiful pine sub floor which we stained a dark brown and sealed.
