Retro Renovation readers continue to discover amazing retro wonderfulness daily, golly I can hardly keep up with your email tips. But keep them coming! Snaps today go to Helen, who sent me this tip on this amazing vintage sofa sectional on craigslist in British Columbia. [link long gone.] Oh my: A 1940s or 1950s style sectional with original upholstery, big as a Studebaker … moreover, lookie the hideaway spaghetti lamps –>
… plus, there’s a hideaway storage in the center, and note how ottomans kind of click in and click out — revealing side tables — when you want to use them. This thing is a triumph of human engineering. Or something.
I immediately contacted the seller, who gave me permission to feature these photos, told me that she is a regular reader of the blog and provided a bit more historical information: “The manufacturer of the sofa is a an old Canadian company – Newport Chesterfield Company of Toronto.”
Goes in “woddity” category. Thank you, Helen!

I have a Newport chesterfield I’m selling at an estate sale. I think it was made by the same company. This one has a bed also. It has the circular middle that spins and looks like a bar plus two built in end tables. The sofa is a sectional gold with flowers on the cushions so retro and cool. Still has plastic on the set.

This sofa just sold again yesterday 9/12/16 in Vancouver Canada for $1,600. Sadly, I was not the lucky buyer.

I have this exact sofa in the same colour as the above pictures. It’s currently on ebay and Craigslist vancouver. I am asking $1600. It’s all original. I can be reached at ad1973 at shaw dot ca

Not sure if anyone is still interested in this set.
I’m located in South-Western Ontario, Canada
I have an exact set with pop-up lamps and lazy suzy in my basement that I’m currently looking to find a good home for.
Not in as great condition unfortunately but with a little love it could be a true show piece.
Send me an offer. syca@live.ca

I worked in the office of Newport Chesterfield back in the early 70s. Leo Goldstein was the owner & creator. His craftmanship and attention to detail & quality was second to none. An artist in his own right along with an amazing group of skilled workers. I was always amazed and delighted to see the newest chesterfield model make its debut into the showroom. Always unique and often ahead of its time.

Wow — thank you for this information, Juanita!

My aunt had this sofa in royal purple. As a kid I used to love playing with all of the “features”. I can still remember the texture of the fabric (same as photo) and using my finger to trace the stitching on the diamond back – the tufting was very deep and the edges surprisingly rigid. A truly awesome piece of art.
