Tour a time capsule house: 1975 groove pad, Fort Scott, Kansas

Kate - Updated: May 31, 2021

Retro Renovation stopped publishing in 2021; these stories remain for historical information, as potential continued resources, and for archival purposes.

retro-mod-bedroomTour-a-Time-CapsuleBold, retro interior decor done right is so exciting — like the bedroom above in a time capsule house spotted by reader Terri. Not many people these days go for matching bedspreads, wallpaper and draperies, let alone orange carpet when decorating a room. Even if this style isn’t your cup of tea, you have to admit that it is magical and can instantly transport you to the groovalicious 70s. It is impossible not to smile when you see a sunny, happy, flower power filled room like this — and there are many more amazing retro design touches in this 1975 time capsule house in Fort Scott, Kansas — listed by Realtor Crystal Mason from H&H Agency, Inc.

The 4,000 plus square foot residence features signature MidCentury details including, wood vaulted ceiling, double sided rock fireplaces and multiple rooms opening onto a large central atrium. There is a creative use of interior space with floors divided on split levels or through sunken spaces designed for conversation or lounging. Home is ideal for entertaining! There are 4 large bedrooms, 3 full baths, 2 half baths, a full finished basement, 2 laundry rooms, enclosed sunroom with fireplace, and 6 fireplaces. Also, a 2 car attached garage, plus small garage for golf cart, greenhouse and fenced yard.

retro-living-roomYou’ll notice that several materials are repeated throughout the house — both on the interior and exterior — that give the home a cohesive design feel. The stone on the exterior of the house is repeated in the fireplace.

vintage-tiled-tub-areaThe large, checkerboard tiles in the entryway and front porch are mirrored in the bathroom tiles.

retro-dining-roomEven the paneling in the dining room is related to the exterior siding — both in color and width.

metallic-wallpaperThis groovy bathroom has what looks to be metallic yellow plaid wallpaper — and cheery blue sinks.

retro-rec-roomI love the lower rec room — not just for the neat-o furniture, but also for that built-in bar and exposed staircase.

This does remind me that you had to be fairly well off to decorate in this fashion. These fabrics weren’t cheap and unless you did custom drapes yourself it got very expensive. You had to line them heavily as well or they didn’t last more than a couple years. I don’t believe the drapery fabrics I would have chosen held color as well as they do today. I had an orange room once with a lot of “gypsy” fabric.

On a different note, I am surprised how understated the kitchen is in this house.

Hits most late MCM-style beats. Fun to see a nearly textbook representation. Hope the new owners retain a lot of it.

My mother decorated my childhood bedroom with matching drapes, wallpaper, and bedspreads. Very similar pattern too. Only she put beads up on the half window, not shades. How remarkable to build and decorate your ‘dream’ home and then not touch it for 40 years.

Generally not the biggest fan of 70’s, but this place is spectacular. It really is like a movie/TV set. All it needs is Alice in the kitchen!

Jeepers, is Ozzy Osborne commenting on Retro Renovations? Kind of fun, imagining what all those “censored” words could be.

Here’s a story on our commenting rules https://retrorenovation.com/2013/10/16/reminder-commenting/

It’s fun reading the comments ‘cuz readers puzzle out the edits 🙂

        My basic goal is civility.

What a lovely place. Too bad I’m not wealthy, it’d be a fun house but I would have to reserve that flower bedroom for young children that visited. Oh my it is flower power on steroids.

I love this 1970s “Brady Bunch” spacious home! What amazes me about these time capsule homes, is how the “Lady” of the houses never redecorated (I am so grateful they did not so you can find them and share with us all!) because my Mother, when I was growing up was constantly redecorating to keep up with the trends – our home was groovy in the 1960s, a fun pad in the 1970s, then came the craze of the horrible 1980s geese/bears/country, traditional elegant plaid hunter green and burgundy (yuck) in the 1990s and now in the millennium – we all want to recreate the 50s,60s & 70s.
