1956 time capsule ranch house, impeccably decorated in French Provincial style

Kate - Updated: June 8, 2021

Retro Renovation stopped publishing in 2021; these stories remain for historical information, as potential continued resources, and for archival purposes.

pink cinderella bathtub freestandingTour-a-Time-CapsuleWrapping up a busy week: A very interesting time capsule house in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Listed for sale by realtor Brad Knott, this house is not a true-to-’56 time capsule — there were updates in the 1960s or maybe early 70s that brought in French Provincial style. It makes the blog archive in particular for the amazing master bathroom, with its pretty pink Cinderella bathtub at center stage: Yowza, fabulous! Let’s check out the 25 photos, courtesy of Amoura Productions....

amazing mosaic tile wall in a mid century houseThe vanity in this princess-worthy space also is delicous. Plenty of curves, curtains and pillar-like details make this stunning bathroom a memorable mid mod retreat worthy. And do I spy a crystal chandelier? Wow.

  • Year built: 1956

This ranch home, built in 1956, has 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms and has approximately 2,078 finished square feet. This house has a basement and a 2 Car garage.
All Brick ranch style home in unique and quiet neighborhood. 3 spacious bedrooms, master suite, large living room with stone fireplace and access to patio for entertaining. Family/rec room in lower level. New paint on the main floor. All appliances remain. The yard for this home is manicured and has the feel of a park. Plenty of trees for shade and privacy for your relaxation.

painted wood beam ceilingThe home was designed to live large, just look at this huge living room. We love the planter next to the fireplace… and the angled, beamed ceiling — lovely!

wall of windowsA wall of windows framed by majestic coordinating draperies, lets the light pour in.

french provincial kitchenIt is evident that the owners of this home loved blue, white and pink. These three colors are repeated throughout the home, making the whole house feel cohesive. These cabinets look to be in good shape.

I love the clock built into the panelling!!

I’m just guessing here, but after spying the old dishwasher in the basement, I think the upstairs kitchen may have been originally a sweet pink kitchen. The dishwasher couldn’t have come from the basement kitchen, I don’t think, because the basement kitchen features original cabinetry, plus there doesn’t appear to be a cut out for a dishwasher next to the sink. I wonder if I am right.

This home has such a refreshing feel to it with the cool blue all over. It also appears much larger than 1,647 sf, but that could be because the rooms are without furniture and all of the lovely, large windows. I agree with Sarah, I would love to have seen it with the furnishings…I bet it was very tasteful and something tells me there was a velvet couch and lots of cool lamps. I love the basement, it certainly appears many good times were had there. Thanks-I really enjoyed seeing this one.

The back of the house looks just like my elementary school which was built in the 50s. Also, that basement/playroom/kitchen is just great. Can’t you just see the parties they must have had down there?

That was my exact thought! The back of the house so reminds me of my elementary school (built in the early 60s).

This is another house with a modest, unassuming exterior but a super cool interior. Love those kitchen cabinets!

What is the pink appliance in the basement? Is it a dishwasher? I love this house. Pink and blue are my favorite colors!

It looks like it’s definitely a dishwasher! I think it’s just sitting there, not hooked up maybe? Not sure why you’d need a dishwasher next to the laundry sink in the basement, lol.

It looks like the kitchen was maybe updated in the 70s? So I wondered if it had a full pink kitchen that was renovated and that pink dishwasher was a leftover that just got moved to the basement?

Methinks the dishwasher is hooked up and usable – it looks to be next to the basement kitchen, which looks like it has the original cabinets from upstairs.

A terrific house, lots of windows…look at that view! Living in crowded, cemented SoCal for 30 yrs, but having grown up in the Midwest with land like that makes my heart ache..

Wow! There are so many things I love about this house – the monster sized, perfectly pink Princess bathroom being the first thing. I also love the orange striped carpet in the basement pool table room; the 2nd kitchen in the basement with the vintage stove sitting in said kitchen; the adorable tiny curtain in the 3rd bathroom; the large mirror above the fireplace which makes it look like another window; the windows in general throughout the house and the huge living room. What a great house for a great price!

Oh, I ache to imagine what that living room looked like fully furnished!
