1956 time capsule ranch house, impeccably decorated in French Provincial style

Kate - Updated: June 8, 2021

Retro Renovation stopped publishing in 2021; these stories remain for historical information, as potential continued resources, and for archival purposes.

pink cinderella bathtub freestandingTour-a-Time-CapsuleWrapping up a busy week: A very interesting time capsule house in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Listed for sale by realtor Brad Knott, this house is not a true-to-’56 time capsule — there were updates in the 1960s or maybe early 70s that brought in French Provincial style. It makes the blog archive in particular for the amazing master bathroom, with its pretty pink Cinderella bathtub at center stage: Yowza, fabulous! Let’s check out the 25 photos, courtesy of Amoura Productions....

amazing mosaic tile wall in a mid century houseThe vanity in this princess-worthy space also is delicous. Plenty of curves, curtains and pillar-like details make this stunning bathroom a memorable mid mod retreat worthy. And do I spy a crystal chandelier? Wow.

mid century house with amazing interiorFrom the listing:

  • Year built: 1956
  • Square footage: Main level 1,647 plus 400 sq. ft. of finished basement

This ranch home, built in 1956, has 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms and has approximately 2,078 finished square feet. This house has a basement and a 2 Car garage.
All Brick ranch style home in unique and quiet neighborhood. 3 spacious bedrooms, master suite, large living room with stone fireplace and access to patio for entertaining. Family/rec room in lower level. New paint on the main floor. All appliances remain. The yard for this home is manicured and has the feel of a park. Plenty of trees for shade and privacy for your relaxation.

painted wood beam ceilingThe home was designed to live large, just look at this huge living room. We love the planter next to the fireplace… and the angled, beamed ceiling — lovely!

wall of windowsA wall of windows framed by majestic coordinating draperies, lets the light pour in.

french provincial kitchenIt is evident that the owners of this home loved blue, white and pink. These three colors are repeated throughout the home, making the whole house feel cohesive. These cabinets look to be in good shape.

Wowsers! A time capsule near my neck of the woods. 🙂 I love the light fixture in the living room…and that bright basement carpet! It reminds me of the old Price is Right sets. Plinko, anyone?

The house looks to have wonderfully proportioned rooms – wow – and the walls of glass make them all seem that much larger! Everything looks immaculate and betcha there’s lovely hardwoods under all that carpeting. My theory is the upstairs kitchen, much of the decor, and basement rec room were redone in the late ’60s/early ’70s and the basement kitchen cabinets (and stove) were originally upstairs since they look “early 1950s” to me. The basement dishwasher is ’70s vintage and was probably placed where there was readily available plumbing access. Can you imagine being a teenager growing up in this house with that cool basement rec room? What a great party space! Oh and as a side note….I want that living room coffee table!

Wow, what a great house! I love the blue bathroom! But is that carpet in the kitchen? That’s one trend I never quite understood, although certainly easy enough to change out.

That was my same thought. The house is in amazing condition, but the carpet in kitchen and bathrooms would have to go for me. I wonder what is underneath them!

The walls all look toooooo white. I am betting some fantastic vintage wallpaper — metallic foils maybe even! — were ripped out of this house before it was put on the market. 🙁

This is beautiful, just love it!
I wanted to share this flooring I just found. I think there is some good retro looking tiles in here. I was going for fake brick, but if I can’t find a good one, I may pick one of these.

Yes, see Azrock Cortina Autumn Haze and Azrock TexTiles, too. They are the streaky “Jaspe” style – I have the Autumn Haze in my kitchen.

Also, that bathroom needs a little garden gnome leering out of the plants behind the tub there.

My parents have the same bathtub in blue, except tucked in a corner with a shower and a curtain around it. Never occurred to me it could be installed like that.

I have to admit that French Provincial is one of my least favorite mid-century decorating styles, but I’m amazed by how pristine this house is. The countertops, the cabinets, the tile: it all looks brand new. You can tell how much the owners loved it by how well they’ve taken care of it. Hopefully a French Provincial Loving Retro Renovator will come along and snap this baby up!

Something tells me the first thing I would be doing is stripping the blue paint off those ceiling beams.

tee hee, the blue ceiling beams are about the same color as the blue we use here on the blog. It is the color of “trust” 🙂

The master bath – a spa bath for its time. I want a planter in my bathroom. The plants flourish with all the moisture. I want the wall oven.
Who doesn’t want a basement kitchen, throw in a powder room and you could spend the summer down there.
