Remember Nanette and Jim’s wonderful blue bathroom remodel that ended up winning our 2013 The Hard Way Award – Bathroom Category? The couple has been at it again — this time transforming their main floor bathroom into a Mamie pink potty paradise. While we wait patiently for Nanette and Jim to put the finishing touches on the space, Pam and I decided we couldn’t possibly keep it to ourselves and decided to pass along our sneak peek.
We’ve been at it again!! After we finished our blue bathroom (winner of the The hard way, thank you!!), we completely gutted our upstairs bathroom and returned it to pink. (We could see pink paint coming through underneath a really terrible Home Depot remodel that was falling apart.) We just put up the vintage wallpaper this past weekend, and it’s looking so good. Everything in this room is absolutely new to the room (vintage: Crane sink, pink toilet, lights and NOS shower handles).
We are nearly done, not quite ready for a final debut but wanted to let you know it will be done soon. Still need to finish a shelf and “stage it.” Jim also wants me to paint a swan design on the glass shower doors, I’m thinking a frosted glass swan detail would be better.
We’ll include the full list of sources used when we run the “finished” story. Meanwhile, we couldn’t wait to ask Nanette about that yummy floor. What is it? She replied:
The floor is inlaid Marmoleum. I have a friend who does floors and specializes in Marmo, and he gave me a killer deal on this job, it was a bit arduous to install. I was able to watch them install it and it was like cutting a dress out of fabric from a pattern with inlaid details. They made a pattern with lots of notes. I purchased and picked up the marmo, we prep’d the floor but they installed it.
Will keep you posted on the glass project and let you know when it’s done, we love it too. We had a vintage themed cocktail party this weekend and on a tour someone said “at least they didn’t gut the pink bathroom”, this made our day, all new but fooled a vintage aficionado upon first observation!
I think I speak for everyone here when I say, “We love your bathroom!” We can’t wait to see the final, finished room and hear about all the trials and tribulations you faced during this remodel. Plus — how cool is it to have someone think your newly remodeled pink bathroom is original to the house? Great work, Nanette and Jim!

Oh my goodness! This is just fabulouse. Love the hex tiles on the counter and the bullnose trim. Love the floor. Love the wallpaper. I can’t wait to see the before pictures to see the full transformation.

This is gorgeous! I am so envious of handy people like Nanette and Jim (and Kate with your lovely pink potty). I really like the wallpaper and flooring. I’m happy with my own original 1956 bath, but it does need a different floor. I won’t say ‘new’ because the floor was replaced right before we bought the house and it doesn’t match at all. It’s in such good shape, though, I can’t see ripping it up just to replace it. If/when we get ready to do that, I will definitely keep the above flooring in mind. I love how it looks.

Absolutely love it! I am a huge fan of linoleum, so naturally I love marmoleum.
My favorite detail, though, is the bird figurine. It looks like Royal Copley, and it looks like a flamingo! Can it be true?
Nanette says
I picked the black and white flamingo up at a 75% off sale at a local antique mall, it has no markings that I have found so I’m not sure what it is but it is really gorgeous, thanks!

Really nice job! I like the way you broke the square tile pattern on the wall with the hex on the countertop that coordinates the shape in the shower floor. Excellent.

Me, TOO! All I get are arguments when I suggest it. So I put it in my house and let others paint every couple of years. To each his own, I guess, but you can’t beat wallpaper for easy decorating.

You folks have great vision for these projects and obviously know how to go about achieving the desired look. That floor really grabs me. I can imagine it was not an quick and easy install what with the inlay. It’s very practical – no grout, just a smooth floor surface.

Oh my, Nanette and Jim, I just adore your bathroom! To echo Mary Elizabeth, your choices are wonderful! I especially like the canted corner on the vanity and the space underneath – so fifties. I had a pink bathroom in my last house and still have a number of pink accessories, including some lovely perfume bottles that I collected. I would love to pass them on to you if you are interested; they are now in a box waiting to be admired. Let me know, please.

Thanks Janet! Just so happens that we are putting in this glass and lucite wall shelf that I planned to “stage” with things like perfume bottles. Here’s a link you can use to get in touch with me.

Nanette, couldn’t send it – got a message that “no storage area is configured”. Am in CT right now picking up the last of our possessions to move up to Maine permanently. I will try to get in touch in the next couple of weeks when we are settled in.
Mary Elizabeth says
Janet, good luck in Maine. Thank you for being willing to share your retro treasures with others on the site. I’m sure it will work out.

Marvelous job, can’t wait to see total pictures. Some features I like are the integration of the pink tiles with the white, the hexagonal tile on the vanity top playing against the square wall tile, the window between toilet and shower stalls, and that wallpaper. All I can say about it is “that wallpaper”!
Of course, then there’s the floor. Kudos to your friend. And the floor of the shower stall–kudos to whichever one of you designed and installed it.
And good job fooling the fellow midcentury pink bathroom enthusiast!
