Contest now completed: Congratulations to Mary, winner of the Lava Lamp! Thanks, everyone, for playing!

It was fun to write about the 50 year history of Lava Lamps (and see those 20+ vintage designs). Now to follow up: A giveaway courtesy of Lava Lite LLC. One lucky winner will receive a 16.3″ special 50th Anniversary edition of the Lava Lamp — in an cool yellow, purple and gold color combination.

How to enter to win a 50th Anniversary 16.3″ Lava Lamp:

  1. To win, you must be a subscriber to our newsletter (Yes, this is “what’s in it for the blog” — you can opt out at any time after the contest ends.)
  2. To enter, keep scrolling to the Comment field below and tell us where you would use your Lava Lamp. Or a Lava Lamp memory. Or whatever, we’re easy.
  3. One entry per person. Lower 48 U.S. delivery addresses only.
  4. Entries close on Thursday, Oct. 29, around 5 p.m. Eastern — that is, we will close the Comments field at that time.
  5. Prize: One winner will receive one 16.3″ 50th Anniversary yellow wax/purple liquid/gold cap & base Lava Lamp sent directly from Lava Lite LLC.
  6. Pam will choose the winners via the Random Number Generator at random.org. We will email the winner. [Tip: Be sure you enter your email address correctly in the email field of the Comment form.] The winner will have five business days to respond. If we do not hear from you, we will choose the next person who commented. Lather, rinse, repeat. We will post the winner’s first name as soon as all is confirmed.
  7. Terms of use apply.

Many thanks, Lava Lite LLC!

Note: Lava Lite LLC did not pay us to host this giveaway —

If I win the treasured Lava Lite®, I will put it in my bedroom next to my bed and watch the Lava® go up and down, up and down, at night whilst listening to songs such as The Rain, The Park & Other Things by The Cowsills, Incense & Peppermints by Strawberry Alarm Clock, Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In by the Fifth Dimension & White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane as I dozed off into my psychedelic dreams…my first memory of Lava Lamps were that my uncle the chiropractor had them in his waiting room in Springfield, Oregon. I currently have a 36″ one on my kitchen table.

On one of my vacations, I took my Lava Lamp with me and would watch it at night while my family slept. I came to realize that the Lava Lamp action was a metaphor for a human life cycle. The baby Lava sphere is “born” with travial, coming out of the main Lava supply at the bottom of the lamp. It begins it’s life and rises to the pinnacle of the lamp. Then, it slowly goes back down and “dies” being absorbed back into the source of all life-lava, only to be born again, as a slightly different glob. And so it goes, on & on, forever.

I remember wanting one of these soooooo bad in the 80s when I was going thru my hippie phase. Impossible to find (before they started selling them again at Spencer’s). One day my neighbor came over with a Century. Said he’d found it for 2.00 bucks at his church garage sale and got it for me because he knew I liked 60s stuff. It’s aqua with white lava (yes!). It took several hours for that thing to heat up after all those years but it did. Loved the pin holes.

Over the years I’ve found another Century (red/gold), a Mediterranean, a miniature, and also 2 lava night lights for my bathrooms. I will never pass one up!

I was around when these first came out. My cool parents bought one and it was on the TV. I would put it in my mid- century ranch living room.

    Hmmm…more like where WOULDN’T I use it!
So, if neither my teen daughter or my tween daughter steals it, I do believe I would put it in my living room, where I can relax and be mesmerized by it.

I will use it to compliment my fiber optic color changing light!
