Contest now over. Congratulations to winner Jennie!! Thanks, everyone, for playing! ENTRIES NOW CLOSED.
The main reason for my recent Grand LA Tiki Adventure was to see the opening of The Art of the Tiki exhibit. The exhibit was fabulous, and the opening night party was insane! There is a hardcover book to go-with, and I picked up an extra copy to go a giveaway here on the blog. And of course, I had it autographed by Sven and Otto! Read on for entry details.
Sven wrote the book, there are tons of great photos, and there are essays by Shag, Otto and Jordan Reichek. Otto also gets author credit because he curated the exhibit. I have not had time to read my copy yet, but it looks like a must-have addition to the super-collectible Sven Kirsten library of titles!
The book’s description, from the publisher Last Gasp Books:
The Art of Tiki is a passionate study of the Tiki idol as an art form. For the first time, contemporary Tiki art is united and presented equally with what inspired it, original mid-century Polynesian pop. Author Sven Kirsten combines his first-hand experiences in exploring the birth of Tiki style with his intimate knowledge of the Tiki Revival, painting a vivid, visually arresting portrait of a unique, always new art genre. The Art of Tiki is published in conjunction with the 20th Anniversary Tiki Art Exhibition at La luz de Jesus Gallery in Los Angeles.

Happiest about making my house mine. And getting in ahead of an insane market. I love our big trees and hammock. Cmon. Who doesn’t love a hammock?

Our travel/tiki room is making me very happy right now. Bamboo shades, tons of tiki mugs, and other items we’ve picked up in our travels.

Our new basement Tiki Lounge is the happiest place in my world right now…I can’t wait to spend cold winter evenings in front of the Aztec fireplace that graces one of the corners of our tropical oasis!! And the TV tiki diorama we made into a bar makes my heart skip a beat ❤️❤️

My sister (and best friend) and I just signed the contract on a tiny 1953 duplex on the gulf coast of Florida. What I love most about the house is the opportunity to save it from big box store flippers and make it a sweet little midcentury modest home for me and my cats.

The thing that makes me happiest about my house is that it’s paid for. Wishing for a vintage MCM home! 🙂

I live in a 1970’s house w/turquoise bathroom tub, sink & toilet. I have 1970’s tile backsplash in my kitchen & my backyard is all woods w/creatures who share our space.

What I love most about my house is the unique 70’s designs and our circular raised stone fireplace in the center of our living room.

I have to say that as much as I personally enjoy my home, the thing that I enjoy the most has to be the reaction of others when they visit. There does not seem to be a single person I know that cannot help smiling because they *personally* relate to some part of the past that I have unearthed and restored. (My response to why is normally “everybody needs a hobby!”) Their grandmother had the same teak and brass ducks on the wall, their favorite aunt had the same aluminum glider on the porch or their grandfather had a vintage pachinko machine that they remember playing as a kid. I never know what it will be but there is always something. Even little things like the cluster of glass grapes on the coffee table or chalkware fish and a pink Dixie cup dispenser in the bathroom can sometimes make guests happier than they even make me! Sometimes (but admittedly not often) said items will go home with their admirer. Partly because they just should, and partly because most people can’t imagine how to find such things. (Crazy, but true!)

I love my 1955 house, particularly that we saved the pink bathroom and the aqua bathroom, and all the interior work is done, doors restored, windows replaced with vintage appearance. Now choosing the new pastel color for the exterior. Then I can relax and enjoy planning my daughter’s tiki-themed wedding. She bought another 1955 house down the street and is celebrating her wedding at home.
