Contest now over. Congratulations to winner Jennie!! Thanks, everyone, for playing! ENTRIES NOW CLOSED.
The main reason for my recent Grand LA Tiki Adventure was to see the opening of The Art of the Tiki exhibit. The exhibit was fabulous, and the opening night party was insane! There is a hardcover book to go-with, and I picked up an extra copy to go a giveaway here on the blog. And of course, I had it autographed by Sven and Otto! Read on for entry details.
Sven wrote the book, there are tons of great photos, and there are essays by Shag, Otto and Jordan Reichek. Otto also gets author credit because he curated the exhibit. I have not had time to read my copy yet, but it looks like a must-have addition to the super-collectible Sven Kirsten library of titles!
The book’s description, from the publisher Last Gasp Books:
The Art of Tiki is a passionate study of the Tiki idol as an art form. For the first time, contemporary Tiki art is united and presented equally with what inspired it, original mid-century Polynesian pop. Author Sven Kirsten combines his first-hand experiences in exploring the birth of Tiki style with his intimate knowledge of the Tiki Revival, painting a vivid, visually arresting portrait of a unique, always new art genre. The Art of Tiki is published in conjunction with the 20th Anniversary Tiki Art Exhibition at La luz de Jesus Gallery in Los Angeles.

Gone are summers showy blooms. I’m pleased with my pared down porch for Autumn. I have a beautiful giant Tiki as the centerpiece. I interspersed natural elements such as driftwood pieces and large shells among dusty green and russet colored plantings. I overlook the inter coastal waterway where the fall sunsets transform the evening sky and I’m alive in natures diarama.

I’m in the process of moving to a new city after just getting married in Hawaii and having a tiki themed luau reception. For our new home, one criteria is finding a midcentury house that has a perfect space for our planned tiki bar!

What I love most about my 1963 ranch is that it was built for this specific climate in East Central Florida. There are at least two windows in each room which let in the natural sunlight and sea breeze. I love my terrazzo floors which are cool and easy to maintain. It has a very large deep, rectangular pool which would set you back quite a lot if you were to build one today. We’re still in the process of restoring our home and it is our work of art.

I’m most happy to have a Kitchen window that opens and closes….OH and it’s not rotting 🙂

What is making me happiest now is that it is still warm enough to use my Tiki screen porch. I do have to start bringing in the plants and tiki decor before a frost, but not yet!

Honestly? I live in a shared (newer) house…so what’s making me happiest about it are the hardwood floors. They work with everything I own!

Zowie! I am insanely jealous that you got to go-go to THE ART OF TIKI opening shindig. Kowabunga—that must have been a tikiphiles dream.
My mother is a big fan of you and your site. Every time there is a mention of anything tiki, she forwards the email to me so I can read it for myself. While I’m not familiar with your friend Christie (sorry), I am in awe that you are apparently pal-sies with Humuhumu, goddess moderator and webmistress for Critiki. Jeepers! That is so uber-nifty. And thank you for a glimpse into the fabled Oceanic Arts. You covered a lot of tiki ground (and downed a lot of tiki drinks) on your tiki excursion. Thank you for always including touches of tiki in your pages as you come across them. I LOVE it and am so glad there is someone out there who gets/appreciates it.
Cha-cha-cha-CHEERS and mahalo.

I love our extra guest room that doubles as a tiki lounge!

I am rediscovering the fun of having houseplants, so I’m enjoying using the great vintage flowerpots and planters that I have collected over the years. In a big, east-facing window, we just hung three vibrant MCM ceramic planters — orange, yellow, and blue — each with a matching macrame hanger. Makes me smile! We have a ’63 ranch.

Right now, I most like the original bark cloth wall in the breakfast nook because it’s giving no trouble, unlike the 50-year-old plumbing. My wife wants to give a more generic answer, such as the furniture we’ve collected to complement the few pieces original to the house. She actually loves the house best because it’s been in her family since it was built, and now our daughter will grow up here.
