Contest now over. Congratulations to winner Jennie!! Thanks, everyone, for playing! ENTRIES NOW CLOSED.
The main reason for my recent Grand LA Tiki Adventure was to see the opening of The Art of the Tiki exhibit. The exhibit was fabulous, and the opening night party was insane! There is a hardcover book to go-with, and I picked up an extra copy to go a giveaway here on the blog. And of course, I had it autographed by Sven and Otto! Read on for entry details.
Sven wrote the book, there are tons of great photos, and there are essays by Shag, Otto and Jordan Reichek. Otto also gets author credit because he curated the exhibit. I have not had time to read my copy yet, but it looks like a must-have addition to the super-collectible Sven Kirsten library of titles!
The book’s description, from the publisher Last Gasp Books:
The Art of Tiki is a passionate study of the Tiki idol as an art form. For the first time, contemporary Tiki art is united and presented equally with what inspired it, original mid-century Polynesian pop. Author Sven Kirsten combines his first-hand experiences in exploring the birth of Tiki style with his intimate knowledge of the Tiki Revival, painting a vivid, visually arresting portrait of a unique, always new art genre. The Art of Tiki is published in conjunction with the 20th Anniversary Tiki Art Exhibition at La luz de Jesus Gallery in Los Angeles.

I am happiest about my counters (aqua boomerangs) and my back-splash (white subway tile with a chrome stripe).

My newly renovated 1950s-style kitchen makes me very happy right now. It’s so shiny and bright and since we rearranged the location of almost everything in the kitchen, it is now much easier to work in and I have a ton of storage. I love having people walk and say “This looks exactly like my grandmother’s kitchen” or “my kitchen when I was a kid”.

That our renovations are done, including the addition for our tiki bar & we can just ENJOY them, now. It was a LONG time in the making & now we can relax a lot more. It looks fabulous & was SO worth all of the hard work!

I love my Autumn Tiki porch overlooking the intercoastal waterway. A large tiki that was a gift from a local surf shope is the centerpiece. I pared down the plantings and used driftwood pieces and shells to fill out the pots. The plants are dusty green and russet which play off the incredible fall sunsets. I’m living in natures diorama

Over the years we’ve always purchased more home than we need for our little family. Finally, 5 years ago, we bought a small, tract home in beautiful Sarasota, FL, with a lovely pool and lanai. Tract homes are the bedrock of America. Isn’t it fascinating how everyone takes a similar canvas and turns it into their own personal work of art! Because our house is small we can make quality choices that reflect a nice balance of mid-century modern and simplified-tiki styles. We love our home!

We are in the middle of a big remodel, so it’s hard to be happy. But soon it will be done! What’s making me the happiest is working with a contractor who completely gets my mid-century style and doesn’t keep trying to steer me into modern looks and products.

What’s making me happiest is I’ve come to the point where I can let a few things go and am planning to have a sale that will, hopefully, finance new acquisitions.
