Contest now over. Congratulations to winner Jennie!! Thanks, everyone, for playing! ENTRIES NOW CLOSED.
The main reason for my recent Grand LA Tiki Adventure was to see the opening of The Art of the Tiki exhibit. The exhibit was fabulous, and the opening night party was insane! There is a hardcover book to go-with, and I picked up an extra copy to go a giveaway here on the blog. And of course, I had it autographed by Sven and Otto! Read on for entry details.
Sven wrote the book, there are tons of great photos, and there are essays by Shag, Otto and Jordan Reichek. Otto also gets author credit because he curated the exhibit. I have not had time to read my copy yet, but it looks like a must-have addition to the super-collectible Sven Kirsten library of titles!
The book’s description, from the publisher Last Gasp Books:
The Art of Tiki is a passionate study of the Tiki idol as an art form. For the first time, contemporary Tiki art is united and presented equally with what inspired it, original mid-century Polynesian pop. Author Sven Kirsten combines his first-hand experiences in exploring the birth of Tiki style with his intimate knowledge of the Tiki Revival, painting a vivid, visually arresting portrait of a unique, always new art genre. The Art of Tiki is published in conjunction with the 20th Anniversary Tiki Art Exhibition at La luz de Jesus Gallery in Los Angeles.

My favorite part of our house is the retro basement, complete with tiki bar. The tiki bar includes shelves displaying my tiki mug collection. The basement also has an atomic age inspired painted mural done by a local artist that even those who don’t get MCM think is pretty neat.

Our new windows and doors throughout the house make me the happiest right now. I love how our house is so open to the outdoors now.

I love my large kitchen and pantry, the mid-century atomic lighting fixtures and general Modern lines of the house, and the mountain views, especially!

We rent our 1946 tom thumb and it is one of the only ones in the neighborhood that hasnt been extensively renovated so our rent is pretty low. So what i love about this house is i get to enjoy some of the original features and it remains affordable and allows us to save for our future house. Midcentury modest at its best!

I am always loving the vaulted tongue and groove ceiling with exposed cedar beams in our 1958 mid mod.

I’m happiest about the sun room addition I have turned into a tiki bar. Found a fabulous mid century bamboo set with original bark cloth upholstery at an estate sale and large tiki masks and accessories at thrift and antique shops. It’s all coming together and a room that could have been a dumping ground as a mud room will soon be a great entertaining/relaxing place!

I’m thrilled with my third bamboo bar purchase for my house. It’s vintage and came with two bar stools that I’m reupholstering in leopard print. I am a bartender and cocktail writer so more room to make cocktails always makes me happy. My house is newer construction but by buying vintage and mcm pieces, I feel I’m giving it some sasss and personality instead of just leaving it a beige box.
