Contest now over. Congratulations to winner Jennie!! Thanks, everyone, for playing! ENTRIES NOW CLOSED.
The main reason for my recent Grand LA Tiki Adventure was to see the opening of The Art of the Tiki exhibit. The exhibit was fabulous, and the opening night party was insane! There is a hardcover book to go-with, and I picked up an extra copy to go a giveaway here on the blog. And of course, I had it autographed by Sven and Otto! Read on for entry details.
Sven wrote the book, there are tons of great photos, and there are essays by Shag, Otto and Jordan Reichek. Otto also gets author credit because he curated the exhibit. I have not had time to read my copy yet, but it looks like a must-have addition to the super-collectible Sven Kirsten library of titles!
The book’s description, from the publisher Last Gasp Books:
The Art of Tiki is a passionate study of the Tiki idol as an art form. For the first time, contemporary Tiki art is united and presented equally with what inspired it, original mid-century Polynesian pop. Author Sven Kirsten combines his first-hand experiences in exploring the birth of Tiki style with his intimate knowledge of the Tiki Revival, painting a vivid, visually arresting portrait of a unique, always new art genre. The Art of Tiki is published in conjunction with the 20th Anniversary Tiki Art Exhibition at La luz de Jesus Gallery in Los Angeles.

I love our little 1953 bungalow for so many reasons, but mostly for all of the original details that make it a warm, welcoming and cozy place for us, our pets and our frequent house guests. There’s the original knotty pine in the porch, the aluminum screened storm door, the shiplap exterior, the steel cabinets and enamelled sink in the kitchen, lots of chrome pulls and handles in nearly every room… even the 9×9 floor tiles and pull-down light fixture in the kitchen give me warm-fuzzies. (Yes, we’re saving up to have those dealt with by professionals.) People who visit often say that our wee house feels like “home” within moments of entering. That too makes me happy, knowing others feel the same way about it as we do.

The rattan furniture that I have reminds me of times spent visiting
with a very dear, late friend. She always had the ice bucket full
and snacks ready for drop by guests at the cocktail hour. Her rattan was in her sunroom, windows on three sides, broken quarry tile floor, barkcloth valances above the windows. What wonderful memories!

I’m happiest about the fact that we bought our midcentury house from the original owners, and any renovations that they did over 50 years of ownership were true to the original design.

The ’50s bathroom with grey 4×4 tiles, flying saucer cabinet handles, hidden tootbrush/cupholder, and laundry chute!
