A tailored bedspread has always been one of my favorite options for a mid century bed without a footboard. Those clean square lines — yes! Going through some reader emails, I found this tip from reader Lynne — tailored bedspreads from blair.com at a can-you-believe-it bargain price of just $40 — even for a king-sized bedspread! There’s a somewhat narrow set of color options, but beige … goes with everything! There are matching shams, too. Lynne also wrote about some of the other old-fashioned products she spotted from this retailer:

Hi Pam. I got a Blair catalog in the mail today. I thought they had some of the simple necessities that are so hard to find. In the housewares, I found the sculptured bath rugs, including the one that wraps around the toilet, and matching seat covers. They had pink, lavender, blue, green, sand, and yellow. They also showed several chenille bedspreads in pastel colors…. Lastly, even kitchen-y cafe curtains in cute ruffly and checkered styles. All quite affordable prices…
Indeed, I quite like the look of some of these other products and will probably do some followup stories so that they show up in the correct categories for those who are on the hunt.
Thanks, Lynne, for this great tip! I’m, ummm, not going to say how long ago this email actually came in except to say (1) it’s a testament to these blair.com products because they have been around quite a while, and (2) I need to check my spam folders more often.

Thank you for this article on tailored bedspreads. I have made one of my extra rooms into a guest bedroom, and the bedspread from Blair was the perfect thing. The price was great, and the quality is very nice. I ordered beige which goes with the room wall color (rusty red). I’m now going to order the shams to complete the look.

Great! I’m really considering trying the King in beige for our bedroom.

Heads up for anyone wanting this bedspread: it’s still half off for Cyber Monday plus free shipping, so you can get the queen for $20 TOTAL. Bananas.
Pam Kueber says
Whoa, thanks for the headsup!

Vermont Country Store is another source for retro things of all types. They have ribcord bedspreads, which are hard to find.

I would love to order them, but then what do I do with my collection of chenille bedspreads? I love my chenilles and wouldn’t give them up for the world (and don’t anyone suggest cutting them up). However, a new tailored bedspread would be a nice change.

What a great coincidence!
I’m being forced to retire my cracked Manchu Yellow toilet with a plain white new model, which arrived today and is currently sitting on my porch.
My friend, commiserating on the loss of 1/3 of my buttery yellow bathroom suite remarked I should get a toilet tank cover in yellow to disguise the blinding whiteness.
I replied “But where these days can you get a fuzzy yellow toilet tank cover?”
As it turns out… Blair.
Bless you.
Pam Kueber says
Well, there you go! And the blessing goes to Lynne for her original tip!

Oh No!! How did your toilet crack??

Blair has a ton of stuff for my budget (now that KMart and Shopko are gone!) and of pretty good quality. Their clothes fit real people. I “think” it was Blair that I mentioned pinch pleat drapes but it appears they don’t offer them. which is too bad since they were $19 each compared to Penney’s for $40.
There are quite a few “cheap” catalogs out there that rival quality of higher priced catalogs with better prices.

I saw some tailored bedspreads this afternoon in Eve Kendall’s Chicago hotel room while I was watching North By Northwest. I love this movie so much: excitement, romance, and that fabulous classic MCM house atop Mt Rushmore!

I have always wanted that bedroom .

Just clicked through their website and found a double swag shower curtain like the ones I see in bathroom ads from the 1940’s. I’ve been looking for that style for years. It doesn’t come in the color that I want, but a bottle of Rit dye will fix THAT problem!

How fun!

Hi Pam. I have this bedspread! It was only $35 when I ordered it. I think all the sizes are the same price. I was very pleasantly surprised at how nice it is. The problem in our house is that we have pets, cats and dogs, and they are all on the bed at some point during the day. I was hesitant to spend hundreds of dollars on a bedspread that wouldn’t hold up to claws and mud. So far the snags from cats’ claws have been minimal and the dirt is easy to sponge off between washings. We have washed the whole thing too and it held up great. I highly recommend it.

I think this style of bedspread makes so much sense–it can’t be beat for a clean, crisp, orderly look, and makes it easier to make the bed evenly, too. We have a king sized bed, and even the largest of the king sized blankets barely cover the box spring on 3 sides–
