Maryland Nancy is searching for laminate for her bathroom reno, and alerted me that the colorful Nevamar swirlie’s are discontinued. Alas. So, I did another survey — and here is an update of the laminates landscape for bathroom vanity countertops, as far as I can determine. Scroll over each image with your mouse to see [...]

If you are looking for retro-style laminate for a kitchen or bathroom countertop, you have some blinding research ahead of you. Unless there is a home-run-out-of-the-park solution — like the boomerangs, crackle ice or dogbone still available — it’s going to be a hunt-peck-and-forage to find something that’s “close enough” to original laminates from the [...]
Wowza — here is a ton — several tons, actually! — of vintage Consoweld laminate likely to come on the market soon. I never cease to be amazed at the retro treasures out there, yet to be unearthed. Interestingly, this seller first posted this on our Forum — but then got so much interest, put [...]

Formica last month introduced several new laminate designs that I think could be great for a Retro Renovation kitchen countertop or even a bathroom vanity. In particular — I’m loving the new “dogbone” design, and the new Warp and Weft designs. Dogbones are a classic midcentury motif — as in “dogbone sofa” … and Warp [...]

Saw a basement in a house for sale a few months ago with the shuffleboard pattern. Sets such a fun “tone” for a rec room.
Wow! Thank you so much for this info! We have the Rooster, the Top Hat and the Champagne bucket ones in our basement. We LOVE them so much! We never knew where they came from. I love this site!!!!
Also, I never gave props to Karmi on there for hooking us up with some amazing green tiles for our bathroom that were a PERFECT match!
I am so happy to see these diecut tiles Our basement has the cards, a sailfish, musical notes, a clown, and in the center, a compass that looks similar to the sunburst featured above. Any advice for cleaning and preserving after all these years?
Many thanks,
Sarah
Sarah, I advise you to contact Armstrong regarding this question. Also, know that this old tile can contain asbestos – I always advise having it tested and talking to a pro so that you know what you are working with. Send me a pic when you get a chance – sounds fabulous!
Hi Pam,
I was very happy to see these tiles on your website. We have the cards, sun design, a sword fish(different design than the one shown), and the champagne bottle. We had a really cool chef design that was taken out due to some work that was done in our basement. I only wish I had taken a photo of it before the work was done. Does anyone sell V.C.T. with designs like these? And does anyone have a photo of the chef tile?
Thanks, Pat (Chicago)
when you find images like this one via google — you need to search the site (use categories, they are logical) to get back to the main post. in this case this one, it DOES show the chef: http://retrorenovation.com/2010/01/22/30patterns-for-vinyl-floor-tiles-from-1955/ Also be aware of environmental and safety issues – example: asbestos – when working with old flooring. consult with a professional, be safe.
Thanks Pam, I didn’t see the other block of tiles the first time. Pat
Where can one purchase these retro tiles?
Jackie, you can still get shuffleboards from Armstrong: http://retrorenovation.com/2008/10/14/lets-start-another-movement-to-bring-back-the-basement-shuffleboard/
As for the other pieces, you may be able to find them vintage. Be aware that old tiles like this may contain asbestos – consult with a professional so that you can make informed decisions.
