The grand gift that is Christmas wrapped up in a warmly glowing time capsule are the combined memories of my grandmother making Christmas dinner, my mother baking spritz cookies, putting up our train and tree, watching White Christmas, listening to Johnny Mathis, loads of icicles and ornaments hanging from the tree and the garlands around our doorways, and of course the excitement of the innocence of being a kid and hoping to get that one great present wished for from Santa (and then waking up at 2:00 AM to see if he’d been to our house yet) or digging through my stocking. I still do my tree and garlands to be sure to continue that lovely memory into my later years, although I have no kids of my own. I still feel like a child at least once a year at Christmastime!

It the same since I have been a kid. Bringing out the decorations and putting them out, or hanging them on the tree … suddenly every Christmas comes alive again. Each item that’s been saved and loving unwrapped has a memory and a story. No matter how ragged or fine, every article is cherished.
It reminds me that it’s not the “thing”, it’s the happiness surrounding it that gives it value

What a gorgeous wreath! My favorite part of the holiday season is getting together with family and friends – especially those we haven’t seen in so long. My favorite Christmas decorations are Shiny-Brite ornaments, of course. i love the ones with age-related condition issues the best – those little “age spots” that add so much to their character. My favorites are the round pale pink ones and the ones with the stenciled “snow” or glitter – i have a blue one with the moon and stars in flight – it has a special place on the tree each year.

Q: My Favorite part of the holiday season?
A: Ceramic Christmas Trees – hands down! Especially those with an inscription on the bottom. Vintage Xmas <3

At my house we love unwrapping ornaments and reminiscing about where they came from. From Germany with Great-Grandma, that trip to Marshall Fields in Chicago (what a Christmas shop they had back in the day!), the Xmas craft bazaar at my grade school, gifts from friends no longer with us, etc. We lost a bunch of treasured glass ornaments when our tree fell over a few years back, so now we’re especially grateful for the ones we still have!

What I love most about the holidays are my memories from childhood. When I open the decorations – break out my aluminum tree, color wheel, and retro and vintage ornaments – the smells of the treasured ornaments stored all year take me back to a time when life was simple, uncomplicated, and the love my family shared at Christmas. My mother loved decorating, baking, gift buying – and she always made the holidays special. She has been gone for over 20 years, but her spirit that made the holidays so wonderful for all of us is never forgotten. She would have loved this wreath, too as she was crafting before it was cool!

My favorite part of the holiday is our family going to the Christmas eve service at church and then coming home and having Christmas cookies and Christmas punch and we read stories and my kids get treats and notes ready for Santa.
